ISSUE STATEMENT
The City Council will consider adoption of a resolution expressing its appreciation for the successful
2102 US Olympic Trials for Track and Field that occurred in Eugene from June 22 - July 1. Local
Organizing Committee (LOC) co-chairs Vin Lananna and Greg Erwin will be present to accept the
resolution and discuss the event with the council.
BACKGROUND
The 2012 Olympic Trials were very successful and a tremendously constructive event for the
community in many ways. Hosting the Olympic Trials has immeasurable long-term positive impacts for
the community in economic benefit to the entire area, advancement of City goals related to
sustainability, positive youth development and accessibility, visibility on a national and international
stage that highlights the beauty and livability here, and gains in community pride and unity.
The Local Organizing Committee that developed and implemented Track Town 12 comprises partners
including the University of Oregon, Oregon Track Club, cities of Eugene and Springfield, Lane County,
the State of Oregon, Travel Lane County, Lane Transit District, Eugene Water & Electric Board, and the
Eugene and Springfield Chambers of Commerce, as well as many additional volunteers. Nike is a
significant and generous private partner. The LOC also works closely with USA Track and Field and the
US Olympic Committee to meet their needs as primary stakeholders. LOC co-chairs Lananna and
Erwin have skillfully led the Track Town USA collaborative effort for several years now and the City
wishes to express its appreciation for their commitment and dedication.
COUNCIL OPTIONS
The council may adopt or amend the resolution.
CITY MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION
The City Manager recommends the City Council adopt the attached resolution.
SUGGESTED MOTION
Move to adopt Resolution 5071 in appreciation of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field,
known as Track Town 12.

A RESOLUTION IN APPRECIATION OF THE 2012 US OLYMPIC
TEAM TRIALS – TRACK & FIELD, KNOWN AS TRACK TOWN 12.
The City Council of the City of Eugene finds that:
A.
It is a great privilege and honor for Eugene to have been the host city for the 2012
US Olympic Track and Field Trials that selected the athletes to represent Team USA at the
London Olympic Games.
B.
The 2012 Olympic Trials were highly successful, setting attendance records and
receiving accolades for excellent competitions, well-run operations, outstanding atmosphere,
welcoming personnel and volunteers, and free public access to innovative activities.
C.
Hosting Track Town 12 has immeasurable long-term positive impacts and was a
tremendously constructive event for the community.
D.
The positive community impacts include economic benefit to the entire area,
gains in community pride and unity, visibility on a national and international stage that
highlights the beauty and livability here, and advancement of City goals related to sustainability,
positive youth development and accessibility.
E.
Organizing the Olympic Trials is a huge undertaking that requires years of
planning, countless hours of selfless work, the coordination of many organizations, agencies and
individuals, and marshaling of myriad resources.
F.
Many people and organizations contributed significantly to the development and
success of the event. Partners in the Local Organizing Committee include the University of
Oregon, the Oregon Track Club, the cities of Springfield and Eugene, Lane County, the State of
Oregon, Travel Lane County, Lane Transit District, the Eugene Water & Electric Board, the
Eugene and Springfield Chambers of Commerce, and Nike.
G.
Two individuals, Vin Lananna and Greg Erwin, have especially provided
exemplary leadership and dedication to the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Trials, and the resurgence
of Track Town USA in Eugene.

NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EUGENE, a
Municipal Corporation of the State of Oregon, as follows:
Section 1.
Based on the above findings, the City Council hereby:
•Expresses its sincere gratitude to the partners of the Local Organizing Committee for
their work to plan and carry out Track Town 12, with all its associated community
benefits.
•Extends its thanks to all the volunteers, fans and businesses that contributed to this
wonderful community success.
•Conveys its special, deep and continuing appreciation to Vin Lananna and Greg Erwin
for their vision, direction and commitment in bringing the Olympic Trials to Eugene and
leading the rebirth of Track Town USA.
Section 2.
This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
