He was awarded the Mayor's Leadership Award which is given annually to an Oregon mayor to recognize the valuable contributions that mayors throughout Oregon make each year to their respective communities. In particular, the award seeks to single out those mayors who have shown considerable involvement in community affairs and intergovernmental relations; those who have shown exceptional skills in helping to facilitate productive relationships between the governing body and city employees; and those mayors who have helped other Oregon mayors reach their full potential as community leaders. During his tenure, Mayor Torrey has demonstrated his leadership abilities in many tangible and intangible ways. He led the effort to create a closer bond between local government and school districts, and has been consistently loyal to his avowed passions of the welfare of children and public education. He was a key player in ensuring the success of a local bond measure to pay for after-school activities. The effects of these programs will be felt for years by many of Eugene's youngest and most vulnerable citizens who have benefited from these programs. This award is highly regarded and is very fitting for Mayor Torrey. The organization and community can be proud of this prestigious recognition. For more information contact Sarita Black at 682-5465. Hult Center Sets Up for Fabulous 50's Extravaqanza Oregon Festival of American Music (OFAM), a Hult Center Resident Company, is celebrating its 13th Annual Summer Festival this year with "The Fabulous Fifties." Backstage at the 2,500-seat Silva Concert Hall, the stage crew is hanging the lights in preparation for 11 days of morning, noon and night concerts, musical theater, talks and films. OFAM Jazz Advisor Dick Hyman and an all-star lineup of guest artists will help us revisit the extraordinary richness and diversity of 50's music. Here are some examples of what to expect: · Thursday, August 5, Opening Gala: Silva Hall, 7:30 p.m. A big band and chorus concert featuring music by Brubeck, Leadbelly, Lieber & Stoller · Friday, August 6, Lerner & Loewe's classic 1956 musical "My Fair Lady" opens at 7:30 p.m. in Silva Hall. The elaborately retooled musical features a full pit orchestra and a splendid cast. Kakeqawa Deleqation Visits Euqene On August 21,2004, twenty-two delegates from Eugene's Sister City, Kakegawa, Japan will arrive for a four-day visit to Eugene. Their visit will include meeting with Mayor Torrey, and tours of City Hall and the Eugene Public Library. They will also enjoy the sights and culture of Eugene with local homestay families and tour the McKenzie River valley. The event is being hosted and sponsored by the Eugene-Kakegawa Sister City Committee on behalf of the City of Eugene. This is the 26th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Eugene and Kakegawa. A Friendship Dinner to celebrate the sister city relationship and to honor the guests from Kakegawa will be held on Sunday, August 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the Hilyard Community Center, 2580 Hilyard Street. The community is invited to this event. The price is $15 for general admission. Homestay families and their guests are free. All food will be provided; no RSVP is required. Parks and Open Space Newsletter Due in Area Homes this Week The summer/fall 2004 issue of Eugene Outdoors!, a publication of the Parks and Open Division, is due in homes this week. This issue is a tribute to the over 2,000 people who give their time, expertise and money to Eugene's parks and open space every year. Several of these individuals, representing a diverse cross section of Eugene's population, are profiled in the issue. For those inspired by these true stories, a summary of the ways Eugene residents can get involved is also included. On page two, readers can find out about current Parks and Open Space news, such as the new Moon Terrace deck at the Hendricks Park Native Plant Garden and the national award that the publication recently received. On the back page is the popular calendar of events, listing late summer and fall events in area parks. Work on Willamette Street to Start Monday, Au.qust 9 ............................................................................................................................................................................. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, August 9, on a project to repave Willamette Street between 13th and 19th avenues th and convert Willamette Street to two-way operation between 13 and 18th avenues. The $600,000 project is part of Eugene's pavement preservation program, which is funded in part by Eugene's local fuel tax. Eugene Sand & Gravel is the general contractor. The project is managed by the Public Works Engineering Division. While the focus of the work is pavement preservation other improvements, such as lighting, traffic signal and pedestrian crossing improvements, will be made during construction. The first phase of construction includes installing underground conduit for traffic signal cables and other preparatory work. Excavation and subgrade repairs in the intersection of Willamette Street and 18th Avenue are scheduled to occur at night for several days at the end of August; however, most of the work will be done during daytime hours. The main paving phase is scheduled to begin mid-September and will consist of grinding off the existing surface and applying a new asphalt surface. The final phase in early October will be the restriping of Willamette Street to accommodate two- th th way traffic between 13 and 18 avenues. All work is scheduled to be completed by mid-October. During construction, access will be provided to homes and businesses in the work zone. Updates about the project are being provided directly to affected businesses and residents by the City's project inspection staff. Additionally, a postcard was mailed this week to approximately 350 local residents, business owners and other interested parties.
