AROUND THE CITY
Neighborhood Matching Grant Cycle Now Open
Neighborhood Services has opened the 2013 cycle for the Neighborhood Matching Grants program with $30,000 in
funding. Matching grants are intended to encourage residents to work collaboratively to identify and work on
neighborhood improvements and community-building projects. Project ideas include, but aren’t limited to:
Physical improvement projects that involve recreation and public safety
facilities, natural resource features, public art and spaces, and community
gardens
Public school partnership projects that benefit school children and the
immediate neighborhood
Neighborhood-based events and celebrations
Capacity-building initiatives that serve to create, diversify, or increase
participation in the organizations
Outreach, research, education and organizing projects that address
planning-related topics such as transportation (pedestrian or cyclist safety),
land use (neighborhood or area planning) and public safety (disaster
planning, neighborhood mapping, neighborhood safety)

the application process are:
Applications due for required pre-review – Monday, October 15, 2012
Final applications due – Monday, January 14, 2013
Funding available for selected projects - spring 2013

Food for Body and Spirit for Seniors and Caregivers at Eugene Public Library
The Eugene Public Library’s partnership with the Successful Aging Institute at Lane Community College continues this
summer with free talks on a variety of topics to inform and support seniors and those who work with them.
Chef and educator David Ferris talks about delivering “Delicious Nutrition on a Tight Budget” on Tuesday, July 31, at 6
p.m., at the Downtown Library. Learn from a master with decades of experience preparing exquisite yet inexpensive
meals for cruise ships and retirement centers. He will share tips for low-cost shopping as well as for preparation of
dishes for older adults and others with special diets.
At “Laughter: A Professional Caregiver’s Best Tool,” with Leigh Anne Jasheway, discover new ways to tap into humor
to avoid burnout and feel happier and more productive on the job. This fun and informative talk will be held on
Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m., at the Downtown Library.

Popular Art Classes Offer Many Benefits
Visual, performance and textile art classes offered by Recreation Services are popular year-round and offer many
benefits to patrons. There is so much demand for some classes, such as oil painting, that registration is restricted. The
classes provide an opportunity for residents to learn a new skill or
improve old ones, such as drawing, woodworking or pottery. In
addition to classes, Recreation also offers informal opportunities for
artists to use studios and equipment to work on a specific project at
their own pace and to share common interests with others. For

Other classes give artists opportunities they might not otherwise
have – such as the “Plein Air at the Farm” outing that will take
painters to Bush’s Produce Farm on August 15. Artists will be
transported to the farm to spend the day painting scenes of peach
orchards, produce or flowers.
This fall, one-time, “try-for-free” classes are offered in mixed-media and drawing so an aspiring artist can try out a
