City of Eugene Personnel Drop, Cover, and Hold for the Great 2012 Shakeout
On Oct. 18, at 10:18 a.m., millions of people practiced the lifesaving skill of "Drop, Cover and Hold” for the annual Great
Shakeout Earthquake Drill 2012. It sounds simple, yet in reality it is what will protect people from significant injury or
even death. Ground shaking during an earthquake is seldom the
cause of injury. Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are
caused by collapsing walls and roofs, flying glass and falling objects.
It is extremely important for a person to move as little as possible to
reach a place of safety as most injuries occur when people try to
move during the shaking.
Look around now, before an earthquake. Identify safe places such as
under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall, and then,
when the shaking starts, the response can be quick. An immediate
response to move to the safe place can save lives.

The Poetry Project at Eugene Public Library
During the month of November, join a month-long celebration of poetry for all ages at the Eugene Public Library, hosted in
partnership with Oregon Poetry, Lane Literary Guild, and Young Writers Association. Free events at the Downtown Public
Library include Free Fall, a poetry writing workshop with Oregon Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen, on Saturday, Nov. 3,
from1 - 5 p.m., and a Publish Your Poetry Workshop with Toni Hanner on Monday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. Both workshops
require pre-registration for limited spaces by calling 541-682-5450.
The Poetry Project also includes two readings. For adults, on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 6
p.m., three talented poets from the University of Oregon’s graduate Creative Writing
Program, Julia Kolchinsky Dasbach, Jessa Heath, and Carl Swart will read. On Thursday,
Nov. 29, at 6 p.m., kids and teens will share original works hosted by the Young Writers
Association.
In a special event for teens, The New York Times #1 bestselling author Ellen Hopkins
(pictured) will speak at the Library on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. Hopkins is the author
of phenomenally popular books for young adults, many written as novels-in-verse,
including “Crank,” “Burned,” “Impulse,” “Glass,” “Identical,” “Tricks,” “Fallout,” “Perfect,”
and “Tilt.”
Additional activities at the Downtown Library’s Children’s Center include a drop-in poem-creating activity table and an
illustrated poem display by students from Drinking Gourd Elementary School. Plus, bookmarks featuring poetry by and for
all ages will be distributed at all Library locations, Downtown, Bethel, and Sheldon.

Community Emergency Notification System “Alert Me” Registration Begins
Everyone who carries a cell phone can now learn about an emergency occurring near their home no matter where they are.
Public safety agencies in Lane County are expanding the Community Emergency Notification System, known as CENS, with
"Alert Me" - emergency notifications that are sent to cell phones by text message
or voice. To receive these messages register on the CENS Alert Me website at
http://www.lcog.org/alertme/. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or cellular
phone owners may receive the same emergency message and critical information
about emergency situations as those with land-line phones – but only those who
register.
CENS allows public safety agencies in Lane County to identify an affected area
and, if necessary, send a message that describes the situation and recommends
protective actions residents should take. The CENS system will automatically call
out to all land-line and opt-in telephone numbers within that geographic area and
deliver the recorded message once a voice is heard. Some of the many uses of the
system include: tsunami warnings, emergency evacuations, natural disaster alerts, missing child alerts, hazardous material
incidents and neighborhood emergencies.

Firefighters Join 2012 “Cares Enough to Wear Pink”
Campaign
On Oct. 24, 25, and 26, firefighters in Eugene, Springfield, South
Lane and Lane Rural joined the “Cares Enough to Wear Pink”
Campaign. For these three shifts, firefighters replaced their
blue, duty t-shirts with black and pink shirts to raise awareness
for breast cancer, supporting research, and friends, co-workers,
and family members with breast cancer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the
most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in women, and is the
second leading cause of cancer deaths of women in the United
States. Many friends and family members of these organizations
have been affected by this disease.

Eugene International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 851 and Springfield IAFF Local 1395 purchased the shirts and
fully funded this campaign. No City funds were used, although the effort was supported and endorsed by Fire Department
management. This awareness campaign was endorsed by the IAFF by resolution at their last convention.

Eugene@150 Birthday Celebration Promotes Zero Waste
A very big “thank you” to the Master Recyclers and Hult Center
employees who educated the public and helped make the
Eugene@150 birthday celebration on October 20 a zero waste
success!
In conjunction with the City’s internal zero waste program goals, all
cake leftovers were donated after the event, and all cake scraps
(including compostable cups, forks and spoons, plates, and napkins)
were successfully composted instead of going to the landfill. Thanks
to the Atrium Building’s involvement in the Love Food Not Waste
program, clean-up was easy and most of the event’s “trash” was
diverted to better use (donated, composted, or recycled).

Compost Photo Contest Entries Due November 14
November is an exciting month for compost. Both America Recycles Day and the one-year anniversary of the Love Food
Not Waste commercial compost program are happening. In honor of these two great events, Waste Prevention and Green
Building staff are holding a photo contest, Compost Photo Challenge, that runs from Nov. 1 to Nov. 14. Everyone’s photos of
compost are welcome. It can be a backyard pile, the pile created in a garden
plot, one at work, or anywhere. Be creative. Photos are due on Wednesday
Nov. 14, the day before America Recycles Day (Nov. 15). Photos can be
submitted by email to Stephanie Scafa or posted directly tothe Love Food Not
Waste Facebook page (‘Like’ the page, too!) All entries will be counted; feel
free to enter multiple photos.
The prize: a FREE yard of Love Food Not Waste compost, delivered to
residences or Eugene-area gardens of choice. The winner will be announced on
America Recycles Day, Nov. 15. Happy birthday, Love Food Not Waste!

Police and Fire Participate in Options Unlimited Event for Girls
Young women recently learned first-hand that their career options are truly unlimited. Women in careers at the City of
Eugene were joined by other female professionals at a career day event on Oct. 19 at Willamette High School. More than 60
girls from area middle schools and high schools attended the event, which focused on nontraditional career opportunities
for women.
The girls spent the day listening to career representatives talk about their
jobs, educational requirements, and why they chose their careers. In many
cases, the representatives offered hands-on workshops.
Career representatives included a pilot, a civil engineer, a plumber, a
construction worker, an FBI agent, a Eugene police officer and a Eugene
firefighter/paramedic.
This was the third year the event has been held and event organizers plan
on hosting a career day on an annual basis. For more information about the

Mark Your Calendars for Upcoming International Human Rights Day Events
Each year the City of Eugene and Human Rights Commission collaborate on events marking the anniversary of the signing
of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. International Human Rights Day is celebrated the world over and is an
opportunity to reflect and refocus work towards a fuller actualization of human rights.
The Human Rights Commission, in partnership with the Lane County Network for Immigrant Integration, will host a
celebration on the theme of Immigrants Rights = Human Rights at 5:30 pm, Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Atrium. Ibrahim
Hamide will deliver the keynote address, and the work of youth who are engaged in human rights work in the classroom
and community will be honored. The Human Rights Commission needs everyone’s assistance in choosing elementary,
middle and high school age recipients of the 2012 International Human Rights Awards. Nominate a deserving, young

From 12 – 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 10, the City of Eugene will present its annual International Human Rights Day staff awards.
Public Works is hosting the event at 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard, Maintenance Building 2, and lunch will be provided. The
Human Rights Commission will select one individual for an award from each department in the City who infuses work with
a human rights perspective. All staff nominated will be publicly recognized for their commitment towards achieving a
more inclusive, just and equitable community. The nomination form is available online.
