Fire Captain Deployed to New York City
Eugene Fire Captain Ben Meigs, as a member of the National Disaster Medical System, has been deployed with the rest of
his team to assist the residents of New York City in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Captain Meigs, who has almost 17
years of service with the City, is expected to be in New York through the end of
November.
The Fire Department is very proud of the work Meigs does and wishes him safe travels
and the best of luck in fulfilling his duties on the east coast. He will be a great asset to the
people of the region who have lost so much in this disaster.
When responders deploy to large-scale events such as conflagrations or the aftermath of
hurricanes such as Sandy, they not only provide a great service to those communities in
need, they also bring back valuable experience which is shared with co-workers and applied to the City’s response system
here at home. In 2005, the Eugene Fire & EMS Department deployed two firefighters to Hurricane Katrina as part of a
FEMA 30-day deployment.

“Turkey Burn” Eliminates Thanksgiving Meal Guilt
Enjoy all the courses of that scrumptious Thanksgiving meal this Thursday and on
Saturday, Nov. 24, conquer the guilt at the Turkey Burn, a special water aerobics class at
Sheldon or Echo Hollow pools. “Turkey Burn” water fitness classes are offered from 9:30 -
10:30 a.m. at both locations. The drop-in fee is $5.
Low-impact exercising in the water tones and strengthens through the use of special
equipment in the water to resist movement. Participants strengthen core muscles and
improve balance while experiencing a workout at the desired intensity. It may also lead
participants to take a series of classes!
Sheldon Pool is at 2443 Willakenzie Road; Echo Hollow Pool is located at 1655 Echo

Happy Birthday, Love Food Not Waste
Love Food Not Waste (LFNW) turned one- year-old last week and students at the Village School hosted a great birthday
celebration. The Village School is an LFNW participant and prides itself on using food scraps full circle by composting on-
site, sending material for commercial composting, and using compost to grow vegetables that are served in the cafeteria. In

a great combo, the LFNW birthday celebration was held on America Recycles Day, Nov. 15. Rexius donated seven yards of
finished LFNW compost for the Village School Garden and following the delivery, students celebrated with a ceremonial
(and edible) compost cake. Additionally, community partners
provided a variety of recycling, reuse, and compost education
tables for students while 8 graders hauled the donated

compost into the school garden. Event partners included
Rexius Sustainable Solutions, The School Garden Project,
Partners for Sustainable Schools, M.E.C.C.A., BRING, Lane
County Waste Management, OSU Compost Specialists, and
Sanipac
In the last year, Eugene businesses diverted over 1,000 tons of
food waste from the landfill – roughly equivalent to 100
garbage truck loads. Currently, 95 local businesses participate
in the program. LFNW allows participants to reduce waste by
sending food scraps (meat, dairy, fruit and veggie scraps, and bakery items) as well as plant trimmings, food-soiled paper,
and waxed cardboard to be composted. The City provides free training, assistance, and food waste bins to the businesses
that sign up for the composting service with their garbage hauler.

Music and More at Eugene Public Library
The Downtown Eugene Public Library will host a Bilingual Family Fiesta on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. Kids and their adults
are invited to watch and learn salsa dancing with Mario and Jenny Mora, joined by the Cuban salsa dance group Dale
Tumbao. And every Saturday at 11:15 a.m., enjoy Cuentos y Canciones: Stories &
Songs in Spanish, at the Bethel Branch.
The Jarvie & Thomas Classical Guitar Duo (pictured at left) will play a free concert at
the Downtown Library for First Friday, Dec. 7, at 6 p.m. When John Jarvie and Peter
Thomas, two of the Willamette Valley's most popular musicians, perform together,
they showcase more than double the beauty, grace, and precision each is well known
for. Travel with them through time and around the world to enjoy the beautiful
music of the renaissance, baroque, classical, and modern eras in England, France,
Italy, Spain, and Latin America. On the First Friday of each month, the Downtown
Library stays open until 8 p.m.
