Love Food Not Waste Celebrates the New Year!
What goes in the food waste bin and which Eugene businesses
participate in the Love Food Not Waste program? Check out the
new, two-minute Love Food Not Waste informational program
video which features Mayor Kitty Piercy discussing the
importance of food waste. The video gives an overview of which
materials are acceptable in the compost and what happens to
the compost once it is hauled away. The video will be utilized as
a training piece for new participating businesses in Eugene.
To find out which Eugene businesses are Love Food Not Waste
participants, check out the new interactive online participant
map hosted on the City’s website. So far, 95 businesses have
participated – spread the word! For more information, contact

Preventive Maintenance “Keeps Facilities Running Right”
Preventive maintenance is a full time job for the Facility Management Division’s maintenance section. The Facility
Maintenance section has established an aggressive preventive maintenance program to extend the life of building systems
and equipment, improve reliability and save energy in over 100 City
facilities. The preventive maintenance program provides a cost savings
over reactive maintenance programs by keeping building systems and
equipment in working order and reducing downtime.
Facilities uses an asset management program to produce monthly
preventive maintenance work orders that cover everything from
roofing inspections to the backflow preventers in the basements, and all
the building systems in between.
Last fiscal year, the maintenance staff completed 4,670 preventive
maintenance work orders. Of these work orders, 650 were for fire/life
safety devices, such as fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems and

fire extinguishers. The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

staff completed 2,289 preventive work orders to keep the working

environment comfortable while saving energy. The balance of the preventive maintenance work orders addressed roofing,
plumbing, electricity, elevators and other building systems that employees and customers count on every day.

State Department Develops Video on Biking in Eugene
Eugene’s reputation as a bicycle-friendly city extends to the East Coast and staff at the U.S. State Department. The State
Department's Bureau of International Information Programs selected Eugene as an excellent example of an innovative city
for sustainability and biking. State Department staff hired Crossborders, a
New York City media company, to develop a video on biking in Eugene for
the State Department’s Innovative Cities Program. City of Eugene
Transportation Planning staff provided the film makers with a list of
bicyclists who have been working with City staff to make this bike-
friendly city even more bikeable than it is now.
The Eugene residents who are filmed in the State Department video are:
Holly McRae, a member of Eugene’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory
Committee (BPAC); Shane MacRhodes, Eugene 4J School District Safe
Routes to School program manager and a BPAC member; Emily Swenson,
a teacher at Eugene Village School and member of the Lane Area
Commission on Transportation; and Hanna Scholz, Bike Friday general
manager.
Filming the video was wrapped up at the end of November 2012, and is now available for viewing. The one-minute-and-

Popular Archery Club Holds First Competition
Recreation’s Youth Archery Club held its first competition in December at Sheldon
Community Center. Twenty-eight youth, ages 10 - 16, participated in an Olympic style,
non-elimination event with officially scored rounds at multiple distances. Parents and
friends packed the gym to watch this unique and fun event.
Recreation Activity Coordinator Josh Lutje is the driving force behind the Archery Club.
His enthusiasm has helped the program expand to locations in both the Bethel and
Sheldon regions. Josh also arranged for a generous sponsorship from Cabela’s Outdoor
Outfitters during the school year. Cabela’s provided an award for each participant in the
competition and prizes for first, second and third place. The event emphasized club
values of safety and good sportsmanship. Three more competitions are planned
throughout the school year.

Eugene Public Library Helps Young Children Get Ready to Read
The Downtown Eugene Public Library will host “Language, Literacy, and Early Brain Development,” a workshop for
childcare providers and other adults who work with young children, on Saturday, Jan. 19, 1 – 3 p.m. Admission is free and
no pre-registration is needed.
Early literacy, or “reading readiness,” brings great benefits to individual children, families,
communities, and to society as a whole. Workshop leader Joann Contini will explain “brain
facts and functions” and share new research discoveries about the relationships among
language development, early literacy skills, and early brain development. She will provide
tips for putting this knowledge to practical use, including ways to share the information
with co-workers and parents.
Ms. Contini is a master trainer in the Oregon Registry Training Program, holds a master’s
degree in human development, and has more than 30 years’ experience in early childhood

education. She has worked in preschool classrooms, trained other professionals, and administered statewide programs
including Reading for Healthy Families.
