Alternative Education Fair at Eugene Public Library
Parents, teens, and kids: drop in to the Downtown Eugene Public Library on
Saturday, Jan. 26, between 1 and 4 p.m. for the annual Alternative Education Fair.
Admission is free.
The fair is a great opportunity to learn about alternative education programs in
Eugene and Lane County. Find displays and representatives from more than a
dozen local private schools, charter schools, Eugene District 4-J alternative
programs, and home schooling organizations, plus other educational resources
available through the Eugene Public Library’s online Info Hub, including
homeschooling information and the homework center.
This event is co-sponsored by the Eugene Public Library and the Eugene Waldorf School. For more information, contact the

City Booth Promotes Ways to Outsmart Waste
The City of Eugene and Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) are teaming up to promote ways to “outsmart waste” at the
Good Earth Home, Garden and Living Show, scheduled at the Lane County Fairgrounds Jan. 18 - 20. The City’s booth,
hosted by the Stormwater Education and Waste Prevention and Green
Building programs, will highlight tips for preventing waste and
pollution during home projects such as remodeling and construction,
pressure washing, painting and yard care. EWEB’s booth, featuring
steps to reduce energy waste, will be located across the aisle. Stop by
to learn about how to reuse and recycle construction materials, keep
paint, pesticides and other pollutants out of our waterways and enter
a drawing for fun prizes.

“Computer Institute” Offers Beginner to Advanced Classes for Computer Users
The Recreation Division’s Senior Program offers small, low-cost computer classes for adults
designed to get participants up to speed with the latest in computer technology. Classes will be
held at Campbell Community Center and range from the basic, “How do I turn it on?” for
beginners, to Comprehensive Computer Skills for more advanced users.
Other classes teach seniors how to use social media, MS Office basics, and how to find and use
City services online. Campbell Center also offers individual computer tutoring. The center’s
computer lab is open for individual use Monday - Friday from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., and it’s free.

Plan to Attend Fix-It Fair on January 26
The City of Eugene is hosting its first Fix-It Fair in the Bethel/Trainsong neighborhood at Willamette High School, 1801
Echo Hollow Road, on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The event will showcase simple and affordable ways to save
money and improve the health of homes and families. A wide array of free resources will be available, including workshops
and local community organizations, with information in English and Spanish. Come take advantage of this opportunity to
build skills, gain access to resources and build a stronger connection to the community.
The fair will feature:
Free workshops beginning on the hour
Free professional childcare
Free giveaways every hour
Free LTD bus passes to the event
Free food and coffee
Exhibit and workshops topics include:
Health and Nutrition
Water and Energy Savings
Recycling and Reuse
Garden and Compost Care
Financial Health
Healthy Communication

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leadership Award to be Presented
Since 1988, the Human Rights Commission has selected community members to recognize with the Martin Luther King Jr.
Community Leadership Award. The award is given to honor those who carry on the legacy and spirit of the work of Dr.
King in the community, particularly in the areas of human rights and race relations. This year the Human Rights
Commission has chosen three winners: Carla D. Gary, Emilio Hernandez Jr., and Thomas Ball. In their roles as University of
Oregon Assistant Vice Presidents they collectively helped to make the university a more welcoming and inclusive
environment by serving as advocates and mentors for students of color. They deserve to be recognized, thanked, and
honored for their passionate commitment and hard work to further equity and human rights for communities of color,
thereby making Eugene a better place for all.
The awards will be presented at 6 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom on the University of Oregon Campus at the Lane County MLK
Celebration. This event is one of many to celebrate the life and work of Dr. King. For more information, please visit
