ACT-SO Winners to Compete in Orlando in July
The four gold medal winners of the 22 Annual ACT-SO Talent Competition in Eugene are headed to the national

competition in Orlando, Florida, in July. They are: Brianna Stubbs (pictured at right), North Eugene High School, for
contemporary vocals; Audre Davids, Thurston High School for original essay; Simon Longnight, South Eugene High School,
for dance; and Maya Agapito, South Eugene High School, painting.
The Eugene/Springfield branch of the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People (NAACP) and the City of Eugene presented the local
competition on March 23. The ACT-SO program centers on the dedication and
commitment of community volunteers and business leaders who serve as
mentors and coaches to promote academic and artistic excellence among
African-American students. ACT-SO is an acronym for Academic, Cultural,
Technological and Scientific Olympics.
This year ACT-SO students from Eugene, Bethel, and Springfield school districts
competed in humanities, science, and visual and performing arts categories such
as music vocal and instrumental, dramatics, music composition, mathematics,
health and science, poetry, original essay, drawing, painting, and dance.
Seven South Eugene High School students took medals home. Sheldon High School, Churchill High School, ATA Middle
School and Oak Hill School each had two medalists. North and Thurston High schools each had one medalist.

Annual Book Sale to Benefit Eugene Public Library: April 13 and 14
The Annual Friends of Eugene Public Library Book Sale will be held Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday,
April 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Lane Events Center (Fairgrounds) Performance Hall. Proceeds from this all-volunteer
project support Eugene Public Library programs and services, including Summer Reading for
children and teens. Admission and parking are free.
Browse and choose from thousands of gently used and like-new books on all topics, at bargain
prices of only $1- $2. The sale also includes DVDs, audio books, sheet music, and a huge
selection of music CDs. Recent bestsellers will be available in the “Good as New” section, and
collectors can check for rare and specialty books in the “Individually Priced” section. In the
children's area, find a large selection of books, DVDs, and CDs for kids. VISA/Mastercards will be
accepted, as well as cash and checks.
The Book Sale is the Friends of Eugene Public Library's major fundraiser each year. More than
300 volunteers work on the sale, many year-round. For more information, contact the Eugene

Biggest Dinner Party in Town Being Held at Hult Center
FOOD for Lane County’s 23 Annual Chefs’ Night Out community event and fundraiser returns to the Hult Center on

Tuesday, April 9. For the past 22 years, the Hult Center Lobby has been the destination point for foodies and friends to
gather and sample local gastronomic delights while supporting a worthy
cause - the fight against hunger in Lane County.
According to Dawn Marie Woodward, events and media relations
coordinator for FOOD for Lane County, Chefs’ Night Out is one of their
most successful fundraisers because of the number of attendees and the
amount of money raised.
The small plate form allows participating restaurants, wineries and
breweries to showcase their culinary and presentation skills. Locally
owned and operated restaurants in the community contribute staff time
and food to this event, and King Estate Winery is again the title sponsor.
The biggest dinner party in town nearly always sells out, and 100 percent of ticket sales benefit FOOD for Lane County. For
