Adult Sport Leagues Ready for Summer
It looks like it will be a great summer for City league sports. One of the summer leagues starts
play next month, registration for three more leagues will be held in May, and participation at
the new disk golf course has exploded!
Softball play for 182 men, women and coed teams in the City Adult League will begin on May
19. Meanwhile, 40-45 coed and women’s teams are expected to register for volleyball May 7
– 10, for games that begin June 17. Registration for co-ed summer soccer will be held from
May 14 - 17, and is likely to top 25 teams. Men’s basketball could draw as many as 20 teams.
City staff anticipates 100 individuals will register for summer Ultimate from June 1 - 24, with
those games beginning on July 2.
Each year, the Athletics program records more than 100,000 participants in adult sports
leagues, and this summer is likely to see an increase in that number thanks to the new disk
golf course at Alton Baker Park. Since the new course opened on April 1, it has drawn 300
rounds a day and may add up to 8,000 - 10,000 rounds per month this summer.

City Singers Perform at Eugene Public Library
Join the City Singers for a delightful free concert on First Friday, May 3, at 6 p.m., at
the Downtown Eugene Public Library!
Composed of City of Eugene employees, this talented choir sings everything from
16th century madrigals to doo-wop to folk songs, in many languages. Directed by
Mo Robeson, the group includes purchasers, 911 call-takers, urban foresters,
librarians, court administrators, and more, creating beautiful music together
outside the bounds of their “day jobs.”
Accompanying the choir for this concert will be Shamwari Marimba of Kutsinhira
Cultural Arts Center, a non-profit dedicated to learning and sharing the music of
Zimbabwe.
The Downtown Library stays open until 8 p.m. on the first Friday of each month.

2013 Climate and Energy Action Plan Progress Report
The City of Eugene has released the 2013 Community Climate and Energy Action Plan Progress Report. The report
contains an in-depth discussion of community energy use, provides national and local context, and highlights progress
made in 2012. The report also includes an update for each of the recommendations outlined in the Community Climate and
Energy Action Plan.
The report describes the
continued decline in Eugene’s
total energy consumption even
with rising population in the
area:
Electricity use is down 15
percent since 2000
Natural gas use is down 12
percent since 2006
Gasoline and diesel
consumption is down 16
percent since 2004.
While local trends are headed
in the right direction, there are
important developments at the
national and global level. The
year 2012 was the hottest on record in the United States. It saw the lowest area of Arctic sea ice since satellite records
began over 30 years ago and global greenhouse gas emissions in 2011 were up more than three percent, setting a new
record high for annual emissions.
After reviewing the 2013 Progress Report, City Manager Jon Ruiz noted, “I’m pleased to see that as a community, we
continue to reduce our use of electricity, natural gas and transportation fuels – all important indicators of both a smaller
carbon footprint and reduced dependence on fossil fuels…..We’re moving in the right direction but there is much still to do.
Local agencies across the region are facing budget constraints and reduced staffing resources. We need to come together to
find new ways to collaborate and advance this work.”
