This free festival offers children the opportunity to see a variety of award-winning, nature-related short films from around the world. The films range from a live-action short filmed in Africa, to an Academy Award nominee for best animated short. Two of the films were created by local Eugene filmmakers who will be on hand following the screening to discuss the making of their films. The festival is being kicked off by Mayor Kitty Piercy and is followed by an informational reception with Gopher Broke, 2005 Oscar nominee for best animated short, “giant critters” and lots of information about outdoor will be featured at the Children’s Nature Film Festival activities taking place in the community. Reception participants include REI’s PEAK outdoor program, Pacific Tree Climbing Institute, Nearby Nature, Mt. Pisgah Summer Camp, and the City of Eugene Recreation Division. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., and the screening runs approximately 70 minutes. The festival is being presented by the City of Eugene Parks th and Open Space Division in celebration of the 100 anniversary of Eugene Parks, and has been generously sponsored by Dr. Gray Grieve Orthodontics and the Pacific Tree Climbing Institute. For more information, contact Kelly Darnell at 682-4814 or kelly.a.darnell@ci.eugene.or.us Asian Council Thanks City for Supporting Oregon Asian Celebration David Yuen Tam, President of the Eugene Springfield Asian Council, recently wrote to the Library Recreation and Cultural Services (LRCS) Department expressing appreciation for the department’s continued support of the Oregon Asian Celebration. LRCS was commended for donating the use of Hilyard Community Center, and for providing staff assistance with advertising and class registration. According to a University of Alabama study of festivals, this unique event is the only large-scale festival on the West Coast run entirely by volunteers. Approximately 25,000 visitors attended the event, making the 2006 celebration the largest ever. In addition to local attendees and participants, entertainers, food vendors, volunteers and others traveled to Eugene from around the state and beyond to take part in this wonderful cultural celebration. According to the council’s intercept survey, more than 90% of respondents said the event either met or exceeded their expectations, succeeding in its mission “to hold an event that EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 April 20, 2006 not only provides family entertainment, but has educational value, as well.” In addition, as a result of increased attendance, the Asian American Foundation of Oregon will be able to contribute more funds for college scholarships. Campbell Community Center Volunteers to Be Honored Marv and Mary Krenk, volunteers at the City of Eugene’s Campbell Community Center, are among nine inspirational people, ages 69 - 92, who will be honored by the Lane County Coalition of Senior Programs in recognition of National Older Americans Month in May. Marv and Mary, ages 89 and 86 respectively, teach folk dancing at Campbell Center and perform in a group called “The Ageless International Folk Dancers.” The Krenks, along with the other honorees, pursue active lifestyles through their retirement years and exemplify this year’s theme, In Motion After 60. A@ Older Americans will account for an increasingly significant portion of the population in years to come and are living well as they age by following three basic principles: maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, and staying actively involved. The Lane County Coalition of Senior Programs selected the Krenks and seven other individuals who demonstrate that anyone can get in shape and stay in shape at any age. The coalition will recognize the honorees at a ceremony unveiling the 2006 “In Motion After 60” poster on Thursday, May 18, from 4 – 5 p.m. at the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street, Springfield. The poster will feature a photo of each of the honorees. Joining Marv and Mary Krenk, the honorees include: Beth Ferris (Eugene), 92, who hikes with the River Road Hiking group twice a month; ? , Jim Matejka (Eugene)69, who trains, lifts weights, runs and has been vaulting for over 60 years; ? Jane Dods (Springfield), 70, an avid hiker and backpacker; ? Melanie Reske (Springfield), 85, the oldest competitor in the Oregon Track Club and in its Northwest ? regional organization; Carol Clark (Cottage Grove), 73, who teaches at least two aqua aerobics or arthritis classes six days ? per week; Bud Proctor (Junction City), 70, a member of the Willamette Pass Alpine Ski Patrol; and ? , Ruth Frohmuth (Oakridge)80, who leads stretching and range of motion chair exercises before ? lunch at the Senior Meals Program. In addition to staff from the City of Eugene Recreation Division, the Lane County Coalition of Senior Programs is comprised of representatives from the American Red Cross, Emerald Empire Council on Aging, Cascade Health Solutions, OASIS Education Center, Peace Health Center for Senior Health, RSVP of Lane County, River Road Parks and Recreation District, Senior Meals Program, Senior Connection, Senior Companion Program of Lane County, Senior and Disabled Services, Viking Sal Senior Activity Center, and Willamalane Adult Activity Center. City Information Booths Included at Earth Day Celebration This Weekend th The 7 annual Earth Day Celebration being held this Saturday, April 22, at EWEB’s River Edge Plaza will feature a host of displays and activities with a focus on sustainability. It’s a great opportunity for people to discover why Eugene is recognized as the #1 “Green City” in the nation. Staff from several City of Eugene programs will be on hand to share information with attendees. ? A display with information on cleaning cars the river-smart way will be presented by staff from the Public Works Stormwater Management Program. Attendees can pick up a complimentary felt chamois, the latest issue of Stormwater Connections, and other handouts. ? The City of Eugene Solid Waste and Recycling program will host a compost information booth to educate attendees about the importance of diverting food waste through backyard composting. Children will be able to spin the “Worm Wheel” and win a gummy worm when they answer a question EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 April 20, 2006 about worm bin composting. The booth will be staffed by OSU Extension Service Compost Specialist volunteers. The compost information booth will also have a free drawing for an Earth Machine compost bin. ? The City of Eugene’s Transportation Options Team will be available to offer route planning assistance and provide information on alternatives to driving alone. Free bike maps, bicycle and pedestrian safety brochures, and the new 2006 Bicycle Manual produced by ODOT will be available, along with opportunities to win a prize and to sign up for the Transportation Options E-Newsletter, “InMotion.” ? Parks and Open Space staff will hand out park maps and let people know about the grand opening of Eugene's newest park, RiverPlay Discovery Village, on July 8, and the upcoming Children's Nature Film Festival. All booths will have free handouts unique to their programs, and staff will be on hand to answer questions.
