Mormon volunteers have donated nearly 4,500 hours at locations throughout the park system with truly remarkable results. On Saturday, June 15, they worked their collective magic in River Road, Bethel and Whiteaker area parks. With the help of a team of Park Operations staff, more than 150 volunteers descended on Candlelight, Petersen, Irwin, Arrowhead, Maurie Jacobs and Washington-Jefferson parks, as well as the western end of Amazon Creek. Their accomplishments include spreading more than 100 cubic yards of chips, sanding and painting 21 picnic tables, keeping power washers running for six straight hours, sifting and weeding the sand in playgrounds, scalping and removing 10 yards of sod, and five yards of blackberries and other weeds. After helping remove about a half-mile of sod at Petersen Park, one volunteer commented “It was hard work and we loved doing it. Thanks for the opportunity!” Whaanga Kewene, LDS volunteer spokesperson, conveyed the church’s Volunteers add chips to the playground at Candlelight desire to help Eugene remain the beautiful city that it is. In times of ongoing budget cuts, church members believe their efforts are needed now more than ever and expect this rewarding partnership to continue long into the future. Announcing the Next Working City Episode: Basket of Services The next Working City episode will feature “Basket of Services,” provided by the Metro Fire Department. This presentation is scheduled to run before the start of each regular Monday evening Eugene City Council meeting. An important aspect of living in Eugene is the knowledge that in the case of an emergency, the Fire Department is ready to respond with well-trained and equipped professionals committed to protecting the community. In this Working City episode, the merger of the Eugene Fire & EMS Department and Springfield Fire & Life Safety Department’s special teams is showcased. Council to Vote on Next Fiscal Year Budget On Monday, June 24, 2013, the Eugene City Council will hold several public hearings and take action on the fiscal year 2013-2014 (FY14) budget as previously approved by the Budget Committee. The council meeting will begin at 7:30 pm in Harris Hall, Lane County Public Service Building, 125 East 8 Avenue. Following a public forum and one other item, the council will hold public hearings and th take action on the 2013-2014 proposed budget and the proposed supplemental budget for the current fiscal year. Heroes 2 Oregon Paddle Challenge An exciting new paddling event offers residents the opportunity to be a hero to 13 local injured or disabled veterans, helping them to regain an active lifestyle by sending them to the National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic this September. The Heroes 2 Oregon Paddle Challenge will be presented by City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation Services, Eugene, Cascades & Coast Sports, and Wild Creek Adventures on July 20, 9 a.m. – noon, at Perkins Peninsula Park at Fern Ridge. Adaptive Recreation provides many recreational activities specifically for injured veterans to help them adjust to their new situation and as they return to civilian life. Recent studies indicate that disabled veterans who participate in adaptive sports report benefits such as:  less stress  reduced dependency on pain and depression medication  fewer secondary medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension)  higher achievement in education and employment  more independence The H2O Paddle Challenge begins on shore with nine members of a team seated in a large canoe and the 10th on land in a chair. On the start signal the team member on land runs, and jumps in the canoe. Team members paddle a short prescribed course (400-500 yards), around a marker in the lake and return. Upon returning to shore, a team member exits the canoe, runs a short distance and rings a gong, thus finishing the race. Each team will have two runs. The entry fee is $100 or $1,000 per team. The Eugene Parks Foundation will receive all entry fees and donations. All proceeds from the race will be used for the transportation and accommodation costs of the vets’ trip and participation in the summer clinic. New Pool Concessionaire Serves Nutritious Foods at Fast Food Prices Children and adults at Amazon Pool this summer have a treat in store: new, healthier foods at the concession stand. The new concessionaire, Ume Teriyaki Grill, will offer foods that meet the City of Eugene’s new nutritional goals to reduce childhood obesity. Ume’s menus balance flavor and nutritional values, while still appealing to children and adults - all at affordable prices. All food is prepared fresh the same day, reflecting the Ume motto, “For Goodness Sake.” Ume’s menu items include the classic Bento (protein choice, rice, orange slices, marinated cucumbers, and steamed edamame), from $3-$5 for kids or $8 for adults. Ume also serves teriyaki burgers and Asian fusion Cobb salad. Featured items are EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 June 20, 2013 Painted Hills sirloin and all beef hot dogs, Draper or Koch natural chicken, and Portland-based organic Bui tofu. Snacks include wontons, apple and orange slices, and shaved ice, or Kakigori, flavored with quality fruit-based syrup, a local fruit garnish and mint. The concession stand will be open Monday - Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Thursday - Sunday, 11:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Dinner is served between 4 - 5:30 p.m. or until the pool closes and family meals-to-go are packed in an easy-to-tote, returnable, recycled plastic container. Teen Summer Reading at Eugene Public Library The free Teen Summer Reading Program at the Eugene Public Library helps local middle and high school students keep their reading skills up while school’s out. Plus, Summer Reading is a great way to learn newthings, make new friends, and have fun! Teens can visit any Eugene Public Library location – Downtown, Sheldon, or Bethel -- to sign up for, and pick up a calendar of free events. At sign up, each teen gets to choose a free book to keep, courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Teens can also enter a free raffle for gift certificates by writing book reviews at the Library website. The summer is filled with activities for teens at all library locations, including hands-on art and writing workshops, movies, gaming, and a talent show. Summer in the City Brochures Available in Spanish and English for City’s Free Events It’s a sure sign that summer is here when the City of Eugene’s free outdoor Summer in the City events begin. Come outside and enjoy over 40 events including live music, movies, Sunday Jams: Dancin’ in the Park, Breakfast at the Bike Bridges, and skate competitions. Summer in the City posters and color brochures are now being distributed to all City of Eugene community centers and pools, as well as many other distribution points around town.
