New “Working City” Video Looks at Street Repair Progress
A new five-minute episode of Working City, “Street Repair Progress,” starts by taking viewers back to 2003, when Eugene
was facing a rapidly escalating backlog of street repair needs and the beginning of a program that asked Eugene residents
to “take a closer look” at the condition of city
streets.
Fast forward to 2013 to look at the results of a
local gas tax and two voter-approved bond

streets and improve the environment, all while
exceeding expectations for project delivery.
Working City is financed with Eugene’s telecom
funds and is produced as a public service through
a joint effort involving City staff and Metro
Television. The “Street Repair Progress” video can be viewed on the City’s video web page or by going directly to

Jordan Kent, Walmart Employees, and Others Raise Money for Animal Services
At the upcoming Dog Tales: Waggish Stories with Bite event, SportsNet host Jordan Kent,
comedy writer Leigh Anne Jasheway, Eugene Weekly editor Camilla Mortensen and others will
share their favorite tales of man’s best friend. The fundraiser takes place on Thursday, Oct. 24
from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Cozmic Pizza and benefits Eugene Animal Services and the 1 Avenue
st
Animal Shelter. For more information, visit www.green-hill.org. All advanced ticket holders will
be entered into a drawing for a pet portrait by www.petropolitanmuseum.com.
In addition, with the help of Eugene police volunteers, Walmart employees raised $5,000 for
Eugene Animal Services at their second annual “Hot Dogs for Hot Dogs” event. The event sells
thousands of hot dogs and helps spread the word about not leaving pets in hot cars.

Free Digital Magazines at Eugene Public Library
The Eugene Public Library’s Zinio service offers free, cover-to-cover, current issues of popular magazines for tablets,
eReaders, computers, and phones. Best-selling magazines are available on a wide array of topics: food, home, garden, news,
money, sports, outdoors, fitness, music, art, celebrities, fashion, and more. Check it out at the
Library website.
For a hands-on, how-to, come to one of the Library’s “Free Digital Magazines” classes: Monday, Oct.
21, at 5:30 p.m., at the Downtown Library; Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m., at the Bethel Branch; or
Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m., at the Sheldon Branch. The classes are free, with no pre-registration
needed.

Patrons Seek Information on the Affordable Care Act
One of the most popular subjects at Campbell Community Center these days is the
Affordable Care Act, popularly known as “Obamacare.” As of Jan. 1, 2014, everyone
will be required to carry health insurance and Recreation patrons are eager to know
as much as possible about the cost, any exceptions, the effect on existing coverage,
requirements for veterans and foreign nationals, and more.
Ongoing presentations are held at Campbell Center on the first Tuesday of every
month from 11 a.m. - noon, and the third Tuesday of every month from 3 - 4 p.m. Presenter Thomas Reddy of TR Insurance
focuses on compliance and will answer as many questions about the new law as he can. The presentation is free, but pre-
