He <br />stated he had also investigated number 728 Willamette Street where five faluilies <br />live upstairs with only one lavatory and one sink in the hallway and no bath to <br />accomodate these five famili~s, and that he had asked Attorney Calkins to see <br />what could be done to remedy this situation. He said the conditions there were <br />surely very bad. Mayor Large inquired if the condition at 360 East Broadway <br />had been cleared up and Councilman Stewart stated that pasteboard boxes had been <br />burned and the party had sawed sone of the lumber into wood but; the sit'uation' '::: <br />had not been properly taleen care of as of yet. Councilman Hawn stated that he <br />was well acquainted with this party and that he would see that the matter was <br />taken care of. Councilman Brm,nson also stated tha t he had investigated the <br />condition of the Bushnell Apartments on West Tenth Street and that conditions <br />there were not in very good shape. He said that at the present time, they were <br />doing some remodeling and that he had asked Engineer Clubb to see that Mr. <br />Mosher be instructed to see that the conditions there iNere improved. Mayor <br />Large inquired again regarding multiple sewer connections at the VJest City limits <br />which he had previously reported to the Council. Engineer Clubb stated that he <br />couli not find anything tha t' indicated this si tua tion was go:L.ng on. <br /> <br />9- <br /> <br />The Parks Corr~ittee had no report. <br /> <br />The Sewer Committee had no report. <br /> <br />Councilman Bond stated that the Junior Chamber of Commerce was working <br />on a Safety Drive and had requested that they be allowed to paint nwait for the <br />green light" on the curb where traffic lights are located. A motion made by <br />Councilman Bond, seconded by Councilman Farrington that the Junior Chamber of <br />10 - be allowed this request, was carried. <br /> <br />At this time, Mayor Large stated that he wished to appoint the Budget <br />Committee for the 1942-1943 Budget. This would be for the period commencing <br />July 1, 1942 arrl errling June 30; 1943. He said that he wished to appoint the <br />same Budget Comrnittee that had worked on the Budget for the first six months <br />of 1942 and that the appointments would be as follows: <br /> <br />A. E. Caswell, Edward F. Bailey, C. A. Horton, H. J. Cox, <br />Robert IVJ. Fischer, Jr., C. L. Sigloh, George H. McMorran, <br />and L. C. Scharpf. <br /> <br />On motion made by Councilman Bond and seconded by Councilman Hawn, the <br />ll..-! appointment of this committee was confirmed. <br /> <br />Councilman Stewart at this time presented a memorandum from the office <br />of Civilian Defense, VJashington, D.C. to Mr. Gerald Owen, Co-ordinator by <br />Jack H. Helms, Acting u. b. Regional Director. This was in regard to fire <br />fighting units to be furnished the City by the Goverrunent. Mr. Stewart stated <br />that there were two classes of fire fighting equipment that the Goverr~ent <br />proposed to furnish. One was a unit Inounted on the front of the truck and <br />obtaining its povier by connection with the crank shaft and the other was a <br />self-contained unit with a gas motor and pump mountild on skids weighing <br />approximately 1400 Ibs. That the Government_,would require the Municipalities <br />to furnish a It ton truck for either one of these units. He said the Government <br />Representative was in town last week and that they were asking for a memolqandum <br />of what the Ci ty' swishes viould be. He said that he had called in Chief Husbawn <br />and Councilman Pennington and that they had indicated to the Goverrunent <br />Representative that the City's choice would be five units mounted on the skids <br />and one for mounting on the front end of the truck. Councilman Pennington <br />explained that he had thought that the unit on the skids could be used in a <br />trailer and then in case of an emergency, one could be left at a fire and the <br />truck used S0111e other place at the same time. On motion by Councilman Bond, <br />seconded by Councilman Hawn that the Cornmittee's recownendation be confirmed, was <br />12 ... carried. <br /> <br />Mayor Large reported at this time that the phone at the new Municipal <br />Airport had been taken over by the U. S. Army Engineers and that the Eng.ineers <br />would pay the back bill which had been charged to the City in the amount of <br />13-" $47.69. <br /> <br />14- <br /> <br />At this time, the Recorder read the request of Seymour's Restaurant <br />that the two licenses that had been i.ssued to Mr. Chiaramonte be transferred to <br />Darle A. Seymour and Harold McCrady. A motion by Councilman'Bond and seconded <br />by Cou4cilman Barette that this transfer be allowed was carried. <br /> <br />The following Curb Cut applications were presented: Laura M. Taber, <br />1411 Agate street, and L. V. FiSh, 1162 1'.yler Street.
