Campbell, Benjamin E. and Helen Irene' <br />Peterson regarding the purchase of the east -110 feet of lot 5 and 6, ,Block 3, <br />Driverton Addition, which had been purchased from the City. - The purchasing <br />parties beleiving the lots were at the northwest corner of 19th and Hilyard <br />and after payment was made they discovered they were on the northwest corner <br />of 18th and Patterson streets and were asking refund of the purchase price of <br />$650.00. It was the recommendation of the Finance Committee that if a refund <br />of the $32.50 commission paid to Mr. Campbell and tQe $17.00 paid by the City <br />for'the cost of the title insurance was refunded to the City, that the deed <br />should be ,caneelled anti a refund of the $650.00 be made, to the purchaser. A <br />moiton was made, seconded and carried that this recommendation of~ the'Finance <br />Commi ttee be adopted,. <br /> <br />Street Committee - no report <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />Councilman Stewart reporting for the Fire Committee referred to the <br />recent fire at the Firestone Buildi'ng located at the corner of Ilth,and Pearl~ <br />He stated that the City was confronted with the unusual conditions lnthat theria <br />were piles of truck and passenger tires located at the various vulcaniZing <br />plants in Eugene, and that this was a dangerous situation. He stated: that ther <br />was a huge pile of these tires 'stacked against the north and west wa~l of the <br />Firestone Building and 'that it was almost impossible to put out the fire in <br />this stack of tires. Councilman Stewart stated that these tires had been coll- <br />ected and were awaiting government inspection to be shlpped back to the factory <br />and they thought they should not be allowed to accumulate in large numbers at <br />any of the vulcanizing places. He stated that the City did not yet have a <br />report from the State Fire Marshall regarding the Firestone ,Fire. ,A motion <br />was made, by Stewart and seconded by Crumbaker that no building'permit for <br />reconstruction of this building should be issued until the Council had an <br />opportunity to know just what was being done. Onvoterthis motion-was garried. <br /> <br />Coun9ilman Hawn questioned if the Fire Chief had made a detailed report <br />regarding this recent fire and stated that he thought the City was ,slack in <br />inspectipg by the Fire Departing, of the different business firms "in Eugene. <br />A recomL~endation was made by the Council that the Fire Cheif make a detailed <br />wri tten repQrt regard,ing this Fire-Stone Fire and f?tated ih this report the <br />fire hazards that they found there. Councilman Stewart explained that the <br />Fire Department had not been making inspections on account of the shortage of <br />help and Councilman Hawn suggested that it might not be out of place to ask <br />the Fire, Chief to make some of these inspections. A motion was. made, s,econded <br />and carried that the Fire Chief be instructed to see that the sidewalks around <br />the 'Firestone Building be cleared up at once. ' <br /> <br />Health Department no report, <br />Parks Department - no report <br />Sewers Committee, - no report <br /> <br />,Councilman Hawn reporting for the Police Department stated that I. W.' <br />Parker oft the Naw Aid" AuxilIary had contacted him previous .to tl}e time the <br />meeting was, to be held on April 24th.' That the Navy. Aid Auxilliary had a. <br />captured Japanese Zero' plane that they were exhibiting at various places and <br />had asked permission to exhibit the plane in Eugene for two days) that there <br />was an addmission charge and that~the proceeds were for Navy Relief. Council- <br />man Hawn stated that he had told Mr. Parker that he could not make a committ- <br />ment for the Council but that he would be in favor of this exhibition and when <br />there was no meeting on Arpil 24th he forgot the matter until he received a' <br />letter from :Mrs.. Milton Bren thanking 'the Council for there consent in allowing <br />'t~i's 'plane to be displayed in Eugene.
