ThJ.s motion was ~"o..J <br /> i seconded .by Crumbaker and on vote was carried.:-';-' <br /> :; Street, Fire.& Water, and Health Committees - no report <br /> , Councilman Barette, reporting for the Parks Committee, stated that he <br /> Ii had contacted Manerud Huntington Fuel Co., and that they nad promised to do some- <br /> thing about the removal of the pile of saw-dust and .that they hauled away some <br /> 14 I; already. me stated that he had investigated the possibility of ~sawdust pile <br /> I. being used by the aclohol plant but that they had stated it woul ~ e suitable for <br /> I, tqeir use and further, it would be many months before the plant was in progress. <br /> Councilman Hawn reporting for the Police Department stated that they had <br /> " met with Tony, Ramig, local man for the State Liquor Control Commission, regarding <br /> the boot-legging by TaBi Cab drivers. He stated that they felt there was nothing <br /> 15 I: serious as yet but that they had positive proof of one incident on October 2nd <br /> where a Sailor had purchased a bottle of liquor from a taxi driver at a price of <br /> !' $15.00. Councilman Hawn stated this same condition had occured in Salem and that <br /> ,the Council called in the owners of the Taxi Cab Company.and told them that this <br /> must be stopped or the Taxicab Company's license would be cancelled. Councilman <br /> !: .Rawn stated it was the recommendation of the Police Committee that they should <br /> I: be given authority to deal with the Taxi Cab Company or that a letter should be <br /> addressed to them by the City Attorney advising tham that unless this practise <br /> i was stopped their Taxi Cab-license would be cancelled. Councilman Bailey and <br /> ~:,i <br /> I pavis objected to the threat of cancelling their license stating that it might <br /> Ii ,be impossible at time for the company to know just what was going on. Council <br /> I man Hawn stated that he did not belive in going half-way and stated that the <br /> I Ta~~Ca b Co., should be notified that it would be up to them to see that the <br /> I, ,practise was discontinued. After some discussion by the Council a motion was <br /> i. <br /> f made by Bailey and seconded by Crumbaker that the City Attorney be instructed <br /> : <br /> . to write a letter to the Taxi Cab Company that further violation of this matter <br /> I; <br /> I; would be grounds for the revocing of their license. On vote the motion was <br /> I <br /> I carried. <br /> , <br /> I:: . <br />II i: Mrs. Mary Wallace, 335 Pearl Street, was present and addressed -the <br /> f' Council at this time regarding the proposed condemnation "of_ the barn at the <br /> j' rear of the house. She stated that the barn was in no way a fire or Health <br /> .j hazard; that she intended as soon as material would be available tp cut down <br /> I <br /> !: this building and make it into a modern garage, putting a permanent foundation <br /> " under it and painting it. Attorney Calkins explained that in case of condemm- <br /> " <br /> 16 i' ation proceedings the Ordinance provided that the Council should inspect the <br /> I' building before-hand. Councilman Farrington stated that he and Councilman Crum- <br /> " baker and Engineer Clubb had looked at the building in the afternoon and didnot <br /> ~' : consider it a fire or Health haxard. He stated that the doors and windows were <br /> i closed and that it would be a rank in~iustice to condemn the bUilding. Council- <br /> ,: <br /> i,1 man Crumbaker stated that he did not feel it should be condemned. M~yor Large <br /> !i explained that Mrs. Wallace's intention to remodel the building would be grounds <br /> II for delaying the proposed condemnation proceedings. A motion was made by Bailey <br /> I: and seconded by Barette and carried that the proceedings be, indefinately post- <br /> ;! paned. . . <br /> Ii <br /> s. M. Oalkins, Secretary of the Planning Commission, reported that the <br /> I" <br /> i'l Commission favored the vacation of street and alleys in the property owned by <br /> :1 <br /> !,: the School ~oard and the University south of 19th and west of Patterson, which <br /> 17 I; had been referred to the Commission. Mr. Calkins asked that the Engineer furnish <br /> li a description of the 7 foot strip on High Street between 19th'and 20th streets <br /> I: that is to de beeded to the school board and that the City Recorder should make <br /> I' an investigation as to whether there were any unpaid City assessments or taxes <br /> I.: on any of the lots in the proposed vacation and that he would prepare an ordinance <br /> ':t <br /> II to be presented at the next Council meeting. <br /> I' . <br /> I, Councilman Hawn stated they would like further time for making a report <br /> \, <br /> "i <br /> 18 I'! on the John$on driveway repairs, that had been broken by the Army, as they were <br /> ! ~ unable to contact Mr. Johnson. <br /> Ii <br /> Councilman Hawn also stated that the Elks lodge wanted to have their <br /> tl <br /> :1 New Year's dance on New Year's eve which was Sunday evening. In view of the <br /> II <br /> j:' fact this was Sunday evening they wanted to know if this would in any way be in <br />II 19 11 conflict with the City Dance Ordihance. Attorney Calkins looked up the Dance <br /> I; Ordinance and asked Mr. Davis if this was being held for a profit and' it would <br /> ,II <br /> Ii be public.
