HE STATED THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IS CON- <br />CERNED WITH THE NUMBER OF ORGANIZATIONS MAKING SOLICITATIONS UNDER THE GUISE OF <br />CHARITABLE INSTITUTIONS, OR FOR CHARITABLE PURPOSES, STATING THAT WITH THE CONTINU- <br />ING GROWTH OF THE CITY OF EUGENE THESE ARE BECOMING MORE PREVALENT, AND HE FELT <br />THE PRIVILEGE TO SOLICIT FUNDS IS BEING CONTINUALLY ABUSED BY SOME ORGANI ZATIONS. <br />A SAMPLE COpy OF AN ORDINANCE USED BY THE CITY OF PORTLAND TO CONTROL THIS TYPE <br />OF SOLICITATION WAS PRESENTED FOR STUDY, AND IT WAS MR. BRENNE'S FURTHER RECOM- <br />MENDATION THAT THE CITY COUNCIL CONSIDER APPOINTING A COMMISSION TO WHOM THESE <br />VARIOUS CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS WOULD APPLY FOR PERMISSION TO MAKE SOLICITATIONS <br />MR. SWANSON MOVED SECONDED BY DR. PURDY TO INITIATE A STUDY OF THIS PROBLEM WITH <br />WITH ANY RECOMMENDATIONS TO BE PRESENTED AT A LATER MEETING. MOTION CARRIED. <br /> <br />MRS. SETBACK VARIANCE, 675 WEST BROADWAY, VALLEY LANE HOSPITAL - PRESENTED BY WILLA- <br />METTE BUILDING CORPORATION AND REQUESTED TO ALLOW ADDING TO AND EXPANSION OF <br />THE BUILDING AND CONSIDERABLE REMODELING OF THE FACILITY. THE REQUESTED SETBACK <br />WOULD ALLOW BUILDING TO 20' FROM THE EAST PROPERTY LINE WHEREAS THE REGULATIONS <br />CALL FOR A 50' SETBACK. THE MATTER HAD BEEN CONSIDERED BY THE BOARD OF ApPEALS <br />AND REFERRED TO THE COUNCIL WITHOUT RECOMMENDATION. <br /> <br />BOTH THE ARCHITECT FOR THE CORPORATION AND THE SECRETARy-TREASURER FOR THE <br />CORPORATION SPOKE IN BEHALF OF THEIR PROPOSED PLAN, SHOWING A SKETCH AND PIC- <br />TURES TO POINT OUT THE PROPOSED ALTERATION AND ADDITION. MR. CHRISTENSEN <br />MOVED SECONDED BY MR. CRAKES TO REFER THE MATTER TO THE PLANNING COMMISSION. <br />MOTION DEFEATED. <br /> <br />MR. BOB ERASER STATED THAT IN HIS INVESTIGATION OF THE AREA ADJACENT TO THE PRO- <br />POSED PROJECT, THERE WAS NO VIOLENT REACTION; IN FACT, SEVERAL OF THE NEIGHBORS <br />FELT THIS WOULD BE QUITE AN "IMPROVEMENT TO THE PROPERTY. MRS. L~URIS MOVED <br />SECONDED BY MR. CHATT TO GRANT THE VARIANCE. MOTION CARRIED, MESSRS. SWANSON <br />AND CHRISTENSEN AND CRAKES VOTING NO. <br /> <br />MRS. LAURIS MOVED SECONDED BY MR. RHODODENDRON SOCIETY - THE RHODODENDRON SOCIETY REQUESTED PERMISSION TO CREATE <br />AND NAME A WALK IN THE RHODODENDRON GARDEN IN HENDRICKS PARK FOR THE LATE MR. DEL <br />JAMES IN RECOGNITION OF HIS INTEREST IN THE PARK AND ALSO FOR DONATING SEVERAL <br />RARE SPECIES OF RHODODENDRON TO THE CITY PARK. MRS. LAURIS MOVED SECONDED BY <br />DR. PURDY TO APPROVE THE REQUEST TO NAME THE WALK "JAMES WALK". MOTION CARRIED. <br /> <br />THE RHODODENDRON SOCIETY FURTHER REQUESTED PERMISSION TO CHARGE ADMISSION FOR <br />THEIR RHODODENDRON SHOW IN ORDER TO SECURE FUNDS TO GET EXTRA PLANTS AND FOR FUR- <br />THER IMPROVEMENT OF THE PARK. IT WAS THE GENERAL FEELING OF THE CITY COUNCIL THAT <br />THIS SHOULD NOT BE DONE. MR. HAWK MOVED SECONDED BY MR. CHRISTENSEN TO DENY THIS <br />REQUEST, BUT TO SEND THEM A LETTER OF COMMENDATION FOR THEIR WORK AND EFFORTS IN <br />IMPROVING THE PARK. MOTION CARRIED, MR. SWANSON VOTING NO ON DENYING THE REQUEST <br />TO CHARGE AD MI SS ION. <br /> <br />MRS. LAURIS MOVED SECONDED BY MR. SWANSON TO APPROVE THE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION WITH RE- <br />SPECT TO NAMING THE WALKWAY "JAMES WALK".
