White House Committee on Aging - A White House Conference on Aging has been <br /> called for November of 1971. It has been requested that the Eugene City <br /> Council co-sponsor the program of the District 5 Advisory Committee in naming <br /> a chairman for this committee. Councilman Mohr has accepted the opportunity <br /> to represent the Council. I e <br /> Mrs. Margaret Stauffer thanked the Council for its help to the Committee on <br /> ,: Aging. , She introduced Dr. Green~ a member of the Governor's State Commit- <br /> " <br /> ,I tee for the White House Conference on Agmng. <br /> " <br /> 'I Councilman McDonald announced he will be in Washington~ D. I <br /> " Dr. Purdy moved seconded by Mrs. Hayward to co-sponsor a chairman with the <br /> District 5 Advisory Committee and that Councilman Mohr be named Council <br /> representative and Chairman for this local committee. He invited <br /> the Council to meet at the Airport Restaurant for their committee meeting~ <br /> and tour the facilities. The Council will meet August 19 at the Airport <br /> Restaurant. <br /> ': <br /> h. Objection to Refusal to Hear Firefighter's Petition - Mr. Pat Flynn objected <br /> to the Council refusal to hear a petition of the firefighters. Closure of 13th Avenue - University of Oregon~ after meetings between the City staff <br /> " and the University staff~ has pledged a percentage share of costs of traffic ad- <br /> 'I <br /> justments necessitated by the 13th Avenue vacation. At the same time~ several <br /> future projects in the University area were agreed to over the next ten years. Mr. <br /> Lindstrom has reviewed this with the University administration and has forwarded <br /> a letter approving the arrangements. - <br /> Mr. Oruille Lindstrom said the University agreed to the proposal for sharing costs~ <br /> and hoped the City Council would go along. <br /> Mayor Anderson was pleased the City and the University were looking at this from <br /> an overall view~ and that the University would assume responsibility in coopera- <br /> tion with the City to affect a total plan in the area. Mr. Lindstrom reminded <br /> the Council that the University authority to proceed iSffimewhat limited~ but they <br /> do have the authority to proceed in Items 1 and 8. The others will involve <br /> recommendations to the Board of Higher Education. <br /> City Manager requested prompt Council action so that closure could be accomplished I <br /> before the fall opening of the University. In answer to Dr. Purdy~ he said pro- <br /> vision for access in case of fire or other emergency vehicles must necessarily be <br /> part of any agreement on any vacation. <br /> Councilman Wi11iams requested that Item 12 be taken separately~ as he has a con- I <br /> flict of interest in this area~ and would not want to be prohibited from voting <br /> on the remainder of the items. <br /> Mrs. Hayward moved seconded by Mr. Mohr that the Council adopt recommendations I <br /> submitted by the staff.
