Bach Festival <br /> Councilor Bascom reported that the Bach Festival is successfully underway and <br /> the free noon concerts at the Hult Center are well attended. <br /> C. Removal of Five Trees on Oak Street <br /> Councilor Bascom announced that five sweet gum trees on Oak between 7th and <br /> 8th avenues were removed this morning because the sidewalk was cracked on <br /> three sides and needed to be replaced. She said attempts were made to save <br /> the trees, but the roots were not deep enough to sustain them. She said some <br /> other trees in the city could be saved if there were an adequate root pruning <br /> program. <br /> Answering a question from Councilor Wooten, Ms. Bascom said the sweet gum <br /> trees that were removed were not damaged by the widening of 6th and 7th <br /> avenues. <br /> D. Historic Mill and Elevator <br /> Ms. Wooten asked the Planning Department to prepare a report on discussions <br /> e and negotiations with the Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) and the <br /> Downtown Commission about the historic mill and elevator on EWEB property. <br /> Pat Decker of the Planning Department responded that the Planning Commission <br /> will hold a hearing on Tuesday, July 2, 1986, on an appeal to the Historical <br /> Review Board's decision about the mill and elevator. <br /> E. Council Subcommittee on Advisory Groups <br /> Ms. Ehrman said the subcommittee discussed requiring that one of the existing <br /> positions on the commission be filled by a downtown resident. She said she <br /> would like that this be done before the Downtown Commission considers the <br /> opening of Willamette Street between 8th and 10th avenues. Marge Beck of the <br /> City Manager1s Office said an ordinance amendment to effect the change will be <br /> presented to the council soon. <br /> F. Citizen Concern about Recent Murders <br /> Ms. Wooten said she has received many calls from people in the East Skinner <br /> Butte neighborhood who are concerned about the recent murders in the area. <br /> Ms. Ehrman suggested officers from the Community Affairs Unit make a presenta- <br /> tion about crime prevention to the residents. <br /> e <br /> MINUTES--Eugene City Council June 25, 1986 Page 2 <br />
