He feels strongly that the buildings need to be saved. He says
emotionally the city needs them and he feels that economically it is
- possible to be done.
Laverne Edwards, 1260 President, feels it is sad to erase the work of
forefathers. She would call attention to the LCDC Plan, Goal 5, which
directs cities in their historic preservation plan to preserve buil-
dings. She said that all the public historic buildings are gone so
some of the historically valuable commercial buildings need to be
saved.
Marston Morgan, 1843 Garden Avenue, s~owed drawings of how the buil-
dings would look if restored. The drawings were entered into the
record. He said he is under retainer to a potential developer for the
property. They are seriously interested in preserving the buildings.
He feels that those who say the historic standards don't apply to
these buildings are persons that are not familiar with Eugene's
heritage. He also did not feel it was necessary to make any decision
"tonight." He argued that proposals should be accepted from various
developers and then a more reasonable decision could be made.
John Matott, 4439 Fox Hollow Road, would underscore the importance of
the designation as historic landmarks. He said that without that
designation the tax incentives are not available which could be offered.
Martha Filer, 235 East 3rd, said that the National Register should
be used when designating historic sites. She feels it is distressing
e that the ERA can use so much time to find a way to demolish buildings
but that during that time no one else can present their proposals
. for rehabilitation.
William A. Leady, 1650 Pearl, said it is obvious that these buildings
have historic value.
Clark Cox, 1085 Patterson, Apt. 9, said that, as long as there are
so few old buildings left, as many should be saved as is possible.
Sherry E. Nesbit, 22-1/2 West 17th, said that saving of the last of
the buildings in the downtown area far outweighs the tax dollar
investment.
Philip Dole, 930 East 21st, member of the State Advisory Committee
on Historic Preservation, but speaking as an individual, said these
three buildings contribute to Eugene's background and provide examples
of the simple smaller type of structure.
Jon Christenson, 1682-B Hayes Street, feels that the Renewal Agency
proposals are anti-development. By not designating the three buil-
dings as historic landmarks, it would discourage development to the
property--not encourage it.
e
8/14/78--3
55'1-
