MINUTES <br /> <br /> Eugene City Council <br /> Work Session <br /> McNutt Room--Eugene City Hall <br /> <br /> June 27, 2005 <br /> 5:30 p.m. <br /> <br />COUNCILORS PRESENT: George Poling, Jennifer Solomon, Betty Taylor, David Kelly, Gary Papd, <br /> Bonny Bettman, Chris Pryor. <br /> <br />COUNCILORS ABSENT: Andrea Ortiz. <br /> <br />Mayor Kitty Piercy called the meeting of the Eugene City Council to order. She noted that Ms. Ortiz was <br />not able to attend the meeting as she was out of town. <br /> <br />A. ITEMS FROM MAYOR, COUNCIL, AND CITY MANAGER <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy discussed her recent attendance at the United States Conference of Mayors in Chicago, <br />Illinois, saying it was an opportunity to learn more about "best practices" with regard to such issues as <br />revitalization of downtown, green buildings, and public safety. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy acknowledged the City of Eugene's receipt of a "Nature Friendly" award because of its work <br />on wetlands, wastewater and storm water management, and integrated pesticide management. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy announced that the Mayor's Sustainability Business Initiative Task Force would meet the next <br />day in the McNutt Room at noon. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy reported that the cities of Lane County were meeting with representatives of the Board of <br />County Commissioners on June 30 to discuss public safety funding. She and Mr. Kelly would represent the <br />council at that discussion. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy said she attended the Bruner Loeb Forum on land use policy at Willamette University and <br />heard an interesting discussion. Most interesting to her were the mention of how half of Oregonians were <br />not involved in the discussion on land use that occurred in the 1970s and the acknowledgement of the need to <br />reengage citizens about the topic again. <br /> <br />Ms. Solomon reported she represented Mayor Piercy on Flag Day and presented a proclamation to the <br />Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 293 at its celebration at the Valley River Inn. She said the event was lovely <br />and it was a privilege to be with the veterans. <br /> <br />Ms. Solomon reported that she also stood in for the Mayor for a welcome speech to the delegates of a recent <br />Toastmasters Convention held in Eugene, and noted her own past involvement in the organization. <br /> <br />MINUTES--Eugene City Council June 27, 2005 Page 1 <br /> Work Session <br /> <br /> <br />
