COMMITTEE REPORTS AND ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM MAYOR, CITY
COUNCIL AND CITY MANAGER

Mayor Piercy acknowledged the recent 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials, held at Hayward Field at the
University of Oregon (UO), and expressed appreciation to the university, the Oregon Track Club, the
Convention and Visitors Association of Lane County (CVALCO), the City of Springfield, the volunteers,
the athletes, visitors, all partners in the effort, and City staff.

Mayor Piercy reported she participated in the Mayor’s Walk for the Butte-to Butte race and took four
minutes off her time in an event with a very high turnout because of the Olympic Trials, which were in
progress at the time.

Mayor Piercy noted the press conference to recognize the Beam purchase of the Centre Court/Washburne
property and said it made observers feel energized and optimistic.

Mayor Piercy noted the recent West Eugene Collaborative open houses, which were opportunities for
citizens to weigh in on options for transportation in west Eugene.

Mayor Piercy announced that she would introduce City Manager Jon Ruiz as the featured speaker at the
next City Club meeting.

Ms. Bettman echoed the Mayor’s comments about the trials and the Beam press conference.

Ms. Taylor noted her attendance at the press conference mentioned by the Mayor and was glad to see the
project go forward. She had liked Beam representative Brad Walston’s statement that the street people
downtown were a part of downtown and if someone wanted a homogenous experience, they should go to a
mall. She liked his attitude and looked forward to the completion of the project.

Ms. Taylor was disappointed that some of the money intended for street repairs was to be diverted to other
uses, such as street paving, and she thought the council should be able to discuss that.

MINUTES—Eugene City Council July 14, 2008 Page 1
Work Session
