2.0 Community Profile: Eugene/Springfield Metropolitan Area <br /> <br />2.1 Population and Demographics <br /> <br />The Eugene/Springfield Metro Area is located in the Southern Willamette Valley at the <br />confluence of the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers, between the Coast Range and the <br />Cascades. The Southern Willamette Valley has been populated by a series of native <br />peoples for thousands of years. The most recent Native American inhabitants of the <br />Southern Willamette Valley were collectively called Kalapuya. Archeological evidence <br />indicates that the Kalapuya lived in the area for several centuries. The first European <br />settlers in the area arrived in Eugene and Springfield in 1846 and 1849, respectively. <br />Eugene and Springfield were incorporated as cities in 1862 and 1885. <br /> <br />The Eugene/Springfield Metro Area is the second largest in Oregon. 2003 population <br />estimates for the cities of Eugene and Springfield are 143,395 and 54,720, <br />respectively. These 2003 estimates are about 4% higher than 2000. <br /> <br />2000 Census data are available for the cities of Eugene and Springfield, for Lane <br />County and for the Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), as defined <br />by the Census Bureau.
