The use of CMA was approved on a trial basis by the council in
January 2004. This is the first use of such products by City staff since then. The weather forecast calls
for freezing overnight temperatures, and bridges and overpasses were selected for the preventive
treatment because they tend to ice up more quickly than roadways. Lane County is also applying CMA
this week in response to forecasts of freezing temperatures. Just a few
blocks south of South Eugene High School
lies Amazon Park. The community park is a
popular destination for residents from all
around Eugene, and because it's well-loved
and well-used, it's in need of some attention.
Members of SERV, the high school's
community service club, were glad for the
opportunity to give something back to the
community by devoting a Sunday afternoon
of hard labor improving the park. For three-
and-a-half hours, these industrious students
worked in the playground, raking leaves,
cleaning play equipment, and spreading 37
cubic yards of fir shavings under and around
the play equipment.

"This group of students contributes to all kinds of community projects regularly throughout the year," said
McRae. "We really appreciate that they're helping us make some needed improvements at Amazon
Park."

EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
December 22, 2004
