The following week, Express Blower, a sub-contractor of Rexius that also wants to give back to the
community, donated a truck and crew to blow fir shavings into the playground to complete the work the
students had begun. The company also used the opportunity to provide field training for its workers by
blowing engineered wood chips into the playgrounds at Churchill, Sheldon, and Cai Young sports parks.

SERV, which stands for South Eugene Responsive Volunteers, provides students with the opportunity to
make new friends while getting involved in the community. For more information about SERV, visit
www.servclub.org. For more information about playground maintenance, call Richard Zucker, park
amenities supervisor, at 682-4833. Ben
Jeffries, and his dog Charlie, spend an afternoon each week at the
KidCity Adventures after-school program located at Sheldon
Center. Youth who might be normally too shy to read out loud are
completely comfortable reading to a sweet dog who doesn't "bark"
at any mistakes. This program creates a safe place for youth to
improve their reading skills while building relationships with dogs
like Charlie and his owner.

R.E.A.D. teams are organized by Elaine Prey, an instructor in the ,,~,., '
Academic Learning Skills Department at LCC. Elaine began the
program at Amazon Community Center in 2003. It was so successful that the program now has teams at
four Recreation programs and at the Eugene Public Library, serving youth ages 3 years through 5th
grade.
For more information, contact Recreation Programmer Kim McManus at 682-6343.

Die Fledermaus Comes to Euqene
Where will you be New Year's Eve? Why not greet the New Year in style by attending the Eugene
Opera's season opener, Die Fledermaus, and follow with a gala celebration?

Die Fledermaus is celebrated as the finest of Johann
Strauss' 16 operettas. The "Waltz King" composed this
spitfire favorite that is firmly established in the European
and American opera scenes today. It is a lively and
entertaining example of 19th century Viennese love of fun
and frolic, Die Fledermaus is frequently performed
worldwide in many languages. Eugene Opera's production
features the music in German (with supertitles translated
above the stage) and the dialog comically spoken in
English, a tradition established at the Metropolitan Opera
and other major opera houses.

Immediately following the performance, welcome the New Year with food, drinks, and dancing at a gala
in Studio 1 (separate tickets must be purchased to attend). A great way to end 2004 and begin 2005!

Performances of Die Fledermaus are Friday, December 31, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 2, at 2:30
p.m. in the Silva Concert Hall. For more information, contact the Hult Center Ticket Office at 682-5000.

EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2
December 22, 2004
