PROJECT NAMING STANDARDS
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this document is to formalize in writing and thereby standardize language to be
used for establishing project names.
TYPES OF NAMES:
Because of the various uses of a project name, two distinctly different names need to be created
for a project: a "common" name and a "legal" name.
The common name will be used for Project Number Authorization lists, tabs on file folders, project
index list, verbal reference, subject line on written correspondence, etc.
The legal name will be used for contracts, ordinance descriptions, developer agreements, and
other legal documents.
BASIC RULES FOR COMPOSING "COMMON" NAMES:
For SUBDIVISIONS, use the subdivision name, followed by the types of improvements.
2. For STREET projects involving only one street, use the street name as the key word and
define the limits FROM the nearest northerly (or easterly) intersection TO the nearest
southerly (or westerly) intersection and include the TYPE of work at the end. For example:
"Broadway from High to Pearl; paving, sidewalks, and storm drain."
3. For ALLEY projects, use the parallel street on the north (or east) as the key word, and use the
words "between" and "from/to" as in the following example "611 and 711 from High to Pearl;
alley paving. Note that the limits are from the east end to the west end.
4. For STORMWATER DRAINS and WASTEWATER PIPES on back lot lines, use the same
rules as for alleys.
5. For STREET, STORMWATER and WASTEWATER PROJECTS not near enough to existing
streets to allow the use of normal north/south - east/west conventions, use any nearby
streets to key in on, or even streets that don't currently exist but may someday be extended to
or near the project site. Some examples:
X River Road @ Crocker Street, wastewater
X Crocker Street (extended east) and River Road, wastewater
X Crocker Street/Rover Road, wastewater
X Shields to Soloman, wastewater
If there is no nearby street parallel to the proposed wastewater pipe or storm drain to use as
PIDS Manual 2016, Appendix K - 6 K - 6 - 1
