Summer Reading is a good time and more: studies show that participation keeps reading skills up while
school’s out. Plus, Summer Reading introduces youth to new ideas, new friends, and new things to do.

For kids, each Library visit means a new opportunity to solve puzzles in the Catch the Reading Bug
game, or to buzz into Entomology Central to see bugs magnified 10X. Kids' Summer Reading kicks off
with free shows for the whole family during the first week of summer. Firefly Follies features juggling
comedians Charlie and Zephyr Brown, who amaze the audience and then teach everyone how to juggle.
Performances are Monday, June 23, at the Downtown Library, 11:00 and 2:00 pm, and Tuesday, June
24, 2:00 pm at Sheldon Community Center.

Portland's Nomadic Theatre Company will bring their show The See-Saw Project: 2 Clowns, 1 Mat, No
Exit! to delight Eugene families with slapstick, acrobatics, and a wild imagination. See it Wednesday,
June 25, at Petersen Barn, at 2:00 pm; or Thursday, June 26, Downtown Library, at 11:00 and 2:00 pm.

Weekly events for kids continue at all Library locations, including creative activities, a visit by live exotic
bugs, and more. In keeping with the Metamorphosis theme, teens can enter a new prize drawing each
week by sharing a recommendation for a book, film, or CD that "changed your mind, your mood, or your
life." Free teen events include t-shirt art, altered books, video games, a writing workshop, Teen Team
volunteering, and a talk by Jaki Hunt of Kumoricon, Oregon’s annual anime convention. Starting on
Tuesday, June 24, at the Downtown Library at 1:00 pm, Got Bugs? is a chance to meet the Bug People,
Brian and Wendy Stoner, and their friends: giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches, scorpions, and
tarantulas. For more information about Summer Reading events, visit www.eugene-or.gov/library or call
ReUSE A SHOE Campaign Contributes to New Local Track
Nike has partnered with Eugene School District 4J and the City of Eugene to build and surface a track
that will surround a new artificial turf athletic field at the Arts & Technology Academy (formerly Jefferson
Middle School.) The 2006 Parks Bond Measure included funding for the artificial turf field, but neighbors
voiced support for a new track, as well. As part of the Eugene 08 legacy projects, Nike agreed to provide
$70,000 to pay for the new track’s surface. The material to be used for the surface is called, “Nike Grind.”
It’s made up of recycled sport shoes, and represents state-of-the-art engineering and sustainable
principles.
As part of the campaign to raise awareness about the track renovation--and Nike's recycling effort--LRCS
has placed "ReUSE A SHOE" drop-off bins in the lobbies of all City community centers, pools, and
libraries, as well as at the Arts & Technology Academy and Boys and Girls Club. The program accepts
sports shoes of any brand that have no metal parts or cleats, and are free of mud. The entire shoe with
laces, plastic grommets and leather uppers will be ground-up, and the rubber is gleaned for the track
surface material.
The campaign culminates on June 30, "Sport and the Environment Day" at the Olympic Trials, with a
huge bin at the main entrance of Hayward Field that is expected to be filled with old sports shoes. The
new track and the artificial turf field will be built this fall. Contact Tim Patrick at 682-6347 for more
information.
