Inflation Adjusted Annual Average Wages
(2002 Dollars)

............................................
............................................

Manufacturing represents the second largest (14%) employment sector in Lane County,
second only to Government (16%). Not all jobs in the service sector are low paying, but
the majority pay less than those in manufacturing. The average manufacturing wage in
Lane County is approximately 20 percent higher than the County's average wage.
Because Eugene has the largest manufacturing base in the County, it is essential that
Eugene stabilize and grow its manufacturing sector employment.
In addition to the negative effects associated with changes in Lane County's industry
mix, several business closures have impacted employment opportunities in the local area
(see list below).
Business Closures
Jobs Lost
HMT Technology 350
Sony Disc Manufacturing 277
Rosen Products 225
Stream 206
Emporium Corporate Headquarters 200
Dynamix 97
Advanstar Communications 50
Total 1,405

The re-establishment of an Enterprise Zone in Eugene is seen as an important tool for
attracting new job-creating investments, particularly in the important manufacturing
sector. The Enterprise Zone is also viewed as an important tool for the retention of the
existing manufacturing employment base that is critical to the local economy.
