Many peoplewill,I’m <br />sure,just writeitoffas“standardpractice”.Somewillgotolengthstogetaroundany <br />“negative”characterizationofthisbehavior.Societyas a wholemayhavebecomeusedto <br />beingliedto,butnotallofushave.Wewantthetruth,the“straight facts”.Whatever <br />decisionismade,itshouldbemadewiththefullandhonestfacts. <br />Misleading andDeceptiveStatementsWithoutIntent <br />In theabovecases,Hostickclearlyknowsthetruth andchoosestomisrepresentit,andthe <br />Transportationstaffalso mustknowthetruthandtheychoosetouseit“selectively”. But <br />mostresidentsdon’tpickupon that.Whilesuchthingsenhanceanalreadycorrosive <br />environmentwithintheCity,themajorityofwhatthepublicisfrustrated withisnotso <br />deliberate. <br />Noteverythingthatdeceives ormisleadsisproducedwiththeintenttodoso.Muchofthe <br />time,suchthings are notintentional,butareduetooneormoreofthefollowing: <br />ignorance,incompetence,indifference,carelessness,orself-deception. I think a greatdeal <br />ofthedistrustarises fromthosesortsofcases.Citypersonalneedtoavoidthosethings. <br />Themostdifficultisself-deception.Theothers are moreeasilyprevented,andhaveno <br />placein a “professional”setting.Thedamagethatisdoneisthesamewhetherintentis <br />presentornot.Peoplebecome fed upwithhavingto“teaseout”thetruth, andtheylose <br />trustinwhatevertheCityistellingthem.There are a great manyexamples ofthat,but a <br />detailedaccountwouldmakethisverylong.
