Eugene City Council Retreat <br />February 25-26, 2005 <br /> <br />Retreat Goals · To improve the effectiveness of the governing body <br /> · To build a working relationship between members of the governing body and the <br /> City's Executive staff <br /> · To identify important goals and strategies for the City of Eugene to accomplish in <br /> the ensuing two years <br /> <br />Vision and Goal Statements <br /> <br />Vision and Goals <br /> <br />The Council considered the existing Vision Statement and Council Goals and reflected <br />on how they could/should be changed. The Council and Executive Staff also assessed <br />what the City is doing well with regard to each Goal and what could be better. <br /> <br />Existing Vision Statement <br /> <br />Eugene is a regional center for education, culture and commerce, and a comfortable <br />attractive and affordable place to live and work. We value the variety of our safe, livable <br />neighborhoods and the beauty of our landscapes. We respect the perspectives and <br />lifestyles of our active and diverse citizenry. We strive to 3rovide sound, open <br />government and to deliver effective, efficient services. <br /> <br />Reflections on Vision Statement <br /> <br /> · Recreation is not mentioned <br /> · Economic Development is not mentioned <br /> · No sense of future - should be more forward looking <br /> · Leading with "regional center"- should be more about neighborhoods <br /> · "Citizenry" is not inclusive enough <br /> · Want to be inspired <br /> · Welcoming <br /> · Concept of neighborhoods should be highlighted <br /> <br />Existing Council Goals <br /> 1. Safe Community: A safe community where people feel secure and respected. <br /> 2. Sustainable Community Development: A community that retains a high quality of <br /> life and a healthy economy, effectively links land use and transportation planning, <br /> and successfully manages growth and change in the urban environment. <br /> 3. Healthy Natural and Built Environment: A community that conserves and <br /> enhances the natural environment and provides an attractive and healthy place <br /> to live. <br /> 4. Accessible and Thriving Culture and Recreation: A community that offers a wide <br /> variety of opportunities for positive cultural, recreational and educational <br /> development for all. <br /> 5.
