Nobel Peace Monument

Page 60f7

in Africa.

Why Honor the Nobel Laureates?

A few members of the public may be object to honoring particular Nobel Laureates. Some of
the latter have been involved with policies or deeds that may be inconsistent with peace as we
see it.

Nobody is perfect. This applies both to the Peace Prize winners and to the committee
appointed by NorwayOs Parliament that selects the winners.

Annually the committee selects one Peace Prize winner from hundreds of nominees. The
committee members do their best with the information they have available. While the Nobel
Committee may forgive past deeds, they are unable to predict future actions. The winner
always is deemed to have done outstanding work for peace by ending or preventing wars or
creating conditions that reduce conflict.

No doubt the committee may have made some mistakes, a trait that is quite human. At any
particular time, however, the Prize reflects a genuine effort to honor persons or organizations
that contributed significantly to world peace.

By accepting the judgments of the Nobel Committee at face value one respects their sincere, if
sometimes flawed, efforts to promote the end of war and create lasting peace.

The Nobel Peace Laureate Monument Project Executive Committee

John Attig, Retired Educator and Project Director
The Rev.
