Communities of Color Meeting - Table #3

Note taker: Char Mauch
Facilitator: Annie Bentz
Participants: Barb Bellows
Brinda Narayan-Wold
David Kelly
Bobby Lee
Yoon Shin
Mike Clark
Henry LuVert

Issues of white privilege - didn’t have awareness of gold star walking around with. How
to talk to broader community? Spite of last name Jewish - people talking and make anti-
Semitic remark. Difficult to respond to sometimes.
Recent trip to Toronto - very diverse - Caribbean - East Indian - like comment - not
representative of all people - reconnect with family, Visit helped reassess who I am -
now I say Caribbean Indian American woman. Toronto has bugs and humidity, but very
diverse. What is stopping Eugene from becoming this way? Open door to have people
come and make it diverse.

Notes taken today - wonder what closet they are going to be put it. Percentage of African
Americans same in Eugene today as it was 30 years ago. Feel marginalized. Own
business, but crew would go to white workers rather than me as the owner. Wife is
administrator. Deals with the same issues. Wife accused of reverse racism when people
of color hired. Always called on decision-making. People back us down to justify. Said
people of African American ascent, but used the term Negro. That couldn’t live in
certain areas - get calls all the time - had a young man tell him that worked at Monaco -
another employee said he was raised to hate niggers - had worked there 5 years. Finally
stood up for himself. When people ask me - is there racism in Eugene - lets me know
who they are involved with. White person needs to educate themselves about themselves
and others. In power to make changes.

Koreans were discriminated against and attacked when Hyundai came to area.

Family comes from poor background. Grandfather - sharecropper. Father grew up with
siblings in one room house. Appreciate opportunity to be in room. So many things I
don’t think about. Want to learn more.

Child is ½ of me and ½ Norwegian husband. In day care he got comments about his
beautiful skin color. Impact on other children of African American background. I was
aware, but I didn’t have words to say how their words impacted others. Need to look
and stop and think before commenting.

Company lost two court cases and had found bias against Koreans. Asked to turn this
around. Cases heard in California. Big picture. Not many Asian Americans in TV
positive roles. All aspects in day-to-day life. A bias is just a fact.

Communities of Color 9 July 12, 2006
