Not sure, I’d call it racism. Ski a lot…on the chairlift I was asked where are you from. <br />Person commented that he thought I was from Europe. I was insulted. Guy doesn’t <br />know what he was saying and how hurtful. <br /> <br />Brother married a Panamanian woman, Father was a cop. Accepted her, but would talk <br />about those spiks in front of her. My own faux pas. Would like rice and beans. Invited <br />out to Mexican food. She responded she hated rice and beans. Eugene doesn’t compare <br />to Mid West with anger that is there. In Eugene, it’s subtle. <br /> <br />Racial issues big and deep and subtle. What does this mean? <br /> <br />I’d call it more benign. Not subtle. Son got a soccer scholarship to attend college in <br />Chicago. Coach commented too brown to be white. Too white to be a brother. Son <br />st <br />hates it. Made invisible. Here they know who he is. Last year was 1 year. Didn’t <br />know what to expect. Here it is different, but still the same animal. Here they smile at <br />you, but stab in the back. Midwest more up front. More comments from ignorance. <br />Country sliding down an abyss. Not getting better. <br /> <br />How does discussion, education, and sharing go beyond the regular players and broaden <br />to the community? <br /> <br />How much do you know about Korean or African American culture? What is it like to <br />grow up in projects? None of us knows enough about anybody to understand each other. <br />Guarded. People can take advantage. If you know the person less likely to insult. <br /> <br />Not shy. Will talk about all sorts of things. Feel like I’m intruding if I ask about <br />upbringing. <br /> <br />Seek out other ways to find out about cultures. Let people know you want to know about <br />them. When not sought out is when it’s frustrating. Become involved. <br /> <br />Dangers - people read something and label that group. <br /> <br />Gotta make a step - not a cure all. Start in school level. Who’s going to teach them? <br /> <br />Talking about individuals. Relate to each other. Self-selecting part of different groups. <br />Thank it builds walls rather than bridges. <br /> <br />Value is self esteem. Gay community - need to be with community that understands. <br />Assume it crosses over to race. Proud of who you are. <br /> <br />Protective factors. Help feel safe and healthy. Reduces risks. <br /> <br />Have you been outside of country and only white person. Not an option to leave. You <br />are looked at differently. Start looking at yourself differently. Something’s wrong with <br />me. At this table and even in this room not many look like me. Huge sense of <br />confidence and self awareness to not drag you down.
