Communities of Color Meeting - Table #4

Note taker: Hally McCabe
Facilitator: Prudence Miles
Participants: Guadalupe Quinn
Michael Samano
Mike Takahashi
Ibrahim Hamide
George Poling
Jorge Navarro
David Yuen Tam
Jim Carlson

Start with your hopes for today:

A lot of conversations with City government. Does City have a plan in regards to
diversity? Would like to come up with a framework. I feel in 20 years - seem to stay
stuck where we’re at. Eugene a lot more diverse now than ever before.

Think it’s important to know there are racial issues in Eugene.

She had good point. Here to figure out next step. Yes, there are racial issues/tension.
City needs to know where to go. Problem between City government. Citizens looking to
communities of color.

Hope as result of this we get narrow and specific direction as to next steps.

I’m hopeful all my efforts aren’t in vain. What does symbiotic relationship mean?
Explain how is City involved in Princess of Thailand visit? Need to see how City is
involved. Getting tired of not seeing anything done. Who do we hold accountable?
Doesn’t have to be tomorrow.

City needs to make commitment to develop on-going relationships with communities. Is
there opportunity to let community feed you information? How do we involve you -
other than calling Kitty Piercy? Great opportunity for us to bring folks for you to meet
them. Important for you to be there. Big deal when Mayor came to a function. A lot of
activities that City can be involved with. Don’t have to invent places to go.

Hopeful that City is becoming serious. We’ve had these conversations before…another
meeting. Now, City seems ready to move beyond conversation.

Realistic - don’t go to next move with half-baked ideas. Our communities not always
cohesive enough. Relationships need to be built. Communities need to become cohesive
units - that takes time. Muslim/Arab community - afraid to speak out. Don’t want to be
identified in public light. Not easy - but glad City seriously wants to do something.
Hope we hold their feet to fire. We need to keep asking questions, keep working. Plenty
of work from both sides. Communities need to take it as seriously as councilors. My
community is afraid. If City can help - first step is acknowledgement agreement - “We
Communities of Color 13 July 12, 2006
