Communities of Color Meeting – Table #8

Facilitator: Ruth Wren
Note taker: Laura Niles
Participants: Chris Pryor
Francisca Johnson
Bee Bee Head
Willie Blasher
Cris Lira
Kathy MacPherson
Tim Keely
Jim Garcia

What I encounter can create an attitude which means I’m trying to figure out what I am
perceiving.

Seems like groups band together not just about race but related to other communities.

Teaching cultural class to high school juniors. The know nothing about their ancestors.
Know about today’s discourse. Relate on limited basis to things like the Alamo and
Mexican American War. Storied I hear in education are acting out in professional roles.
Example: teacher telling student to go back to Mexico. Personal bias not being addressed.

At the juvenile department a default person works with all Hispanic juveniles. Their
needs are not addressed effectively. Limited community resource even though the need is
real.

Need a small school atmosphere. Schools not prepared to work with them (Hispanic
youth) equally.

I worry it’s getting worse.

Discussion about illegals is happening. The conversation divides us. Example: left “dark”
husband and son behind to seek new apartment because of possible bias.

Paradigm of multiple perceptions. Example ½ filled glass – either or.

Power and folks of privilege impose a view that can be opposed to that one held by
others.

How would you set a course of action?

Not about celebrating diversity –it is about integration.

People of privilege do not want to go to training. How do we work with hose folks?
Diversity has to be attached to skills. When training comes up we have to know there is a
link to an outcome.
Communities of Color 36 July 12, 2006
