Once kids off school ground whose problem is it? Example – LCC – M. Spilde says “this
is what happened and it is not okay” which at least informs the community.

Is there a way for the Mayor and/or City Council to make these things public without
harming individual rights? What about a regular article in the RG?

We need to identify the behavior we want to encourage.

Information needs to be more realistic.

Asking for oversight in EPD cannot rest on the guy on the bottom. Hard to get things
changed.

I admit there is a problem.

Admitting what the problem looks like, respect the story, integrate that perspective.

I’m talking about issues as “our” problem.

Who is defining what the meaning is. Example: During the Katrina aftermath people
identified as refugees. Whose diversity are we going to work on?

Think about having to have an ID card to vote. It’s going to hurt those who have no
records.

Yes it still keeps those poor and of color from voting against status quo.

How could we structure community discussion to define diversity?

Minorities learn not to make waves; I do and use the chain of authority. In know I can go
to governor but how will that really be of help in the community. We build
allies/relationship groups and are coalescing. We are using survival techniques.

Issues identified by the group:

Talking is good but action is needed.

Need to address issues head-on

Need a course of action – teaching about multiple perspective models particularly in
education.

Training people who “need” it don’t want it.
Leadership is necessary to move ahead.

Critical Issues:

Communities of Color 37 July 12, 2006
