6
Transparency in city government (9)

“City After Hours” (9)

City can be a catalyst for development. He spoke to EWEB about giving more
consideration to contracts who give consideration to minority businesses and contractors.
City is able to do that. Every City bid does a minority business statement (subs, etc.). (9)

Link to other city initiatives – sustainability, professionalism, economic development (9)

Community cultural center (9)

Parks & Recreation: The City Manager said our (city) recreation program is more
diverse, but we haven’t taken steps overtly. We have tried to model the values of
inclusion and diversity; but feels we haven’t taken the same steps for recreation that
we’ve done for employees. He’d like to improve recreation opportunities by partnering
with schools. (10)

CITY COUNCIL

Councilors – submerge themselves in our groups (4)

City council speaking out on issues. (4, 9)

Council members voicing concerns of minority communities. (4. 9)
Diversity training for city council – next step to educate City council (7)
Including discernment and understanding of institutional history); define
diversity; give focus to communities of color (7)

Challenge city council to develop institutional memory (we’ve been here before…we
have the same conversation over and over) and that there be minimum requirement for
people doing business with the city (5)

City council has a bully pulpit to share info, values, and walk the talk. They can show
visible support and lead by example. (5)

Get City Council to meet with groups directly. Go to them. Council asks and initiates.
Look for cross sections within different communities. (9)

City Council takes on responsibility to talk to business community to give employees
paid time off to be part of the discussion (9)

Talk to employees (city?) about why it’s important for them to get involved (9)

Develop group/commission whose focus would be to take things from meetings like this
and watch progress - maybe Human Rights Commission. Could be a separate group or
subset. (9)
