HUMAN RIGHTS PROGRAM FY 2006 ACTIVITIES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS ADDRESSING COMMISSION CAPACITY CITY OF EUGENE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION reements As we are all working with shared purpose we agree to invest in building healthy equitable rela- tionships that mirror and model a diverse community working together to face challenges that arise both in the light and the shadows. We agree to respect and celebrate our diversity as a group, pation styles,' our collective learning and growing,' Eugene's communities. our learning, teaching and partici- our purpose and commitment to the city of A Retreat 2006 Workin Process ADDRESSING COMMISSION CAPACITY The FY 2007/2008 Work Plan was developed by commIs- sioners at committee and commission meetings in May and June and was approved in July 2006 Work Plan Retreat We recognize and honor that we come from diverse experiences and that some of us transgress deep cultural and social values to be present at the table. We also recognize that some have al- ways had a voice at the table while others carry the burden of representing voices not always invited. We recognize, value, and consider all voices and we will strive to ensure that the most marginal- ized and vulnerable among us and in our communities are heard before we come to decision. We will support each other through our shared experience of "having the difficult conversa- tions" on behalf of our community. We agree to be mindful of our own reactivity,' to step up and ask questions,' to seek clarification and understanding,' to reserve judgment,' to challenge each other,' and to speak and listen to each other from the heart with integrity and compassion. Two process sessions were held in January and March 2006 to provide the opportunity for commissioners to ex- plore together their personal values and passions around human rights issues. With the guidance of facilitator Anne Johnstone-Diaz, commissioners developed and adopted a set of agreements as follows Process Retreat We will create safety by minding our power, examining our privilege, and being mindful of our- selves and others. We will choose our words carefully. We will listen deeply. We agree to chal- lenge the idea or position and not the person and to learn from being challenged. We agree to respect and protect each other's dignity. We agree, when we can, to speak our discomfort or dissent and, when we can't, to seek support so that our voice is not lost. We agree to be open to learning from each other and to teaching each other about our experiences and perspectives. We recognize and honor that our experi- ences in the past and in the moment will sometimes limit our capacity. We recognize that we will hurt each other with or without intention and we agree to be open to listening to the experience of others, open to changing our perspectives and to being ready to apologize when necessary. We agree to celebrate, and nurture each other in our work, and to share ourselves, our tradi- tions, and our stories in the spirit of building a richer more tolerant community that honors the human rights and dignity of every member.
