LocalgovernmentsinPortlandandSeattleimplementedsustainablepoliciesthathaveaffected <br />marketdemandforsustainableproducts. <br />OneofKingCountyWashington?sbiggestgreenpurchasesisbiodiesel.Accordingtostaff,the <br />KingCountyMetroBussystemconsumes10milliongallonsofdieselfuelperyear.Halfoftheir <br />currentlyrunsonB20,whichtranslatestotheequivalentof1milliongallonsofB100per <br />year.ThebussystemintendstophaseintheuseofB20intherestoftheirbyyear-end, <br />essentiallydoublingthisdemand.Muchoftheirsupplycomesfromalocalprocessor,yetpart <br />oftheprobleminherentinlarge-scalebiodieselproductionthroughouttheNorthwest <br />remainstheavailabilityofregionalfeedstock.Whiletheirproducerscontinuetoimportoil <br />seedfromeitherCanadaortheUSMidwest,throughcollaborativeeffortsbetweengovernment <br />entities,manufacturersandfarmers,theyarealsoworkingtoincreasetheamountoffeedstock <br />thatisgrowninWashingtonaswell. <br />PortlandandMultnomahCountyarealsoincreasingdemandforanumberofgreenproducts <br />throughtheirSustainableProcurementStrategy.AccordingtoStacyForeman,Sustainable <br />ProcurementProgramSpecialist,theCitynowowns46hybridsedans,sendingthemessage <br />(alongwithothermunicipalities)toToyotathathybridvehicleproductionforapplications <br />shouldcontinuetoincrease.TheCityhasalsousedB20biodieselintheirvehiclessince <br />2004.Thiseffort,alongwithrecentsolicitationsforethanol,B50andB99biodieselandultra- <br />lowsulfurdieselfuel,helpedestablishthefoundationforarenewablefuelstandardpassedby <br />theCityCouncilonJuly12,2006.Thisnewstandardrequirestheuseofaminimumof5% <br />biodieseland10%ethanolforallfuelsoldwithinthePortlandCitylimits.ThisRenewableFuels <br />Standard(RFS)goesintoeffectJuly2007andtheRFSrequirementforbiodieselwillincreaseto <br />10%by2010. <br />TheCityofPortlandhasbeenusingonlyrecycled-contentpaper,withaminimum30%post- <br />consumerwastecontentforallprinter/copiersandbusinessenvelopes.Withanannualusageof <br />138,000reamsofpaper,thishasprovideddemandforrecycledcontentpaper,which <br />isenhancedbythefactthattheireffortshavebeensharedwithanumberofothermunicipalities <br />acrossthecountry. <br />MultnomahCounty?sjanitorialservicesnowrequesttheusageofGreenSealcleaningproducts <br />bytheirserviceproviders.TheCityhasassistedthiseffortbyrequestingproductavailability <br />informationfromvendors;manyofwhichhaveinturncontactedtheCityorCountytoseehow <br />theirproductlinescanorassistthesegreencleaninggoals. <br />Computerpurchasesalsoplayabigpartingreenprocurementdecisions.IntheCity?slast <br />roundofequipmentsolicitations,theyincludedtake-backrequirementsalongwithothergreen <br />measures.?TheCitycontinuestofollowthedevelopmentsofEPEAT(theelectronicproduct <br />environmentalassessmenttool)andanticipatesusingEPEATinfuturesolicitations.Theuseof <br />EPEATbymunicipalitieswilllikelydirectlystimulategreenoptionsforthegeneralconsumer,? <br />(emailcorrespondence).EPEATcanbefoundathttp://69.94.134.185/epeat/. <br /> <br />
