BoththeCityofPortland?sofSustainableDevelopment(OSD)andtheCity?sgreen <br />buildingpolicyhavehelpedpromotetheuseofgreenbuildingmaterialsandpractices <br />throughoutthePortlandMetroarea.CurrentlytheCity?sBureauofPurchasesisworkingwith <br />OSDtoexpandworkshopandtrainingopportunitiesforminority,womenandemergingsmall <br />businesses.ThiswillbothCityprojectsandexpandtheknowledgebasefortheaverage <br />consumertodrawfrom. <br />FurtherimpactoftheCityofPortland?sefforts,accordingtoAmyStork,Communications <br />SpecialistattheOSD,isevidencedby: <br />GrowthoftheNWGreenDirectorythatnowincludesover500businesseswithgreen <br />productsorservices; <br />GrowthoftheCity?sBEST(BusinessesforanEnvironmentallySustainableTomorrow) <br />Awardsprogramfrom30applicantsin2005to45companiesin2006;and <br />TheOSDandthePortlandDevelopmentCommissionarecurrentlyanalyzingwhere <br />materialsingreenbuildingsarecomingfromandwhethertherearelocalsubstitutions <br />availableformaterialsthatnowcomefromdistantlocations. <br />TheUniversityofOregon(UO)hasaComprehensiveEnvironmentalPolicythatincludes <br />anEnvironmentallyPreferablePurchasingPolicy.ThatpolicydirectstheUniversityto?work <br />towardsobtainingthe?bestvalue?bybalancingshortandlong-termcosts,maintenance,life- <br />cycle,andenvironmentalcostsinpurchasinggoodsandservices.?Theintensionsofthepolicy <br />aretogrowthemarketforsustainableproducts;tocommittheUOtothe?goalofmaking <br />environmentallyandresponsiblepurchasingchoices?;andtoencouragethepurchaseof <br />sustainableproductsbytheUO. <br />UOFacilitiesServicesconsidersthesethingswhenmakingpurchasingdecisions: <br />productperformancerecycledcontent;overallproductquality;hazardous <br />chemicalscontent;productlongevity(includingeaseofrepairorwastegenerated <br />fromtheproductorservice(canitbereduced,canthewastebehauledawayandrecycled <br />throughthevendor,istherehazardouswasteinvolvedandwhatarethepotentialhazardous <br />wastedisposalcosts,isthereenergyusedthatwillcosttheuniversitymoney)andenergy <br />oftheproduct.Additionally,theUOconsidersworkersafetyintermsofergonomics <br />andhazardpotential.Whennegotiatingcontracts,theUOFacilitiesPurchasingManagerasks <br />companiesabouttheirsustainabilitypoliciesandwhatenvironmentallypreferableproductsthey <br />carry. <br />SomerecentexamplesofEnvironmentallyPreferablePurchasingattheUOinclude: <br />WorkedwithGrainger,thenumberonesupplierofindustrialequipment,todevelopa <br />catalogdesignedtomeettheneedsoftheUO.TheUOconvincedGraingertoisolate <br />theirproductswithrecycledcontentandthosethatareenvironmentallymoresustainable. <br />GraingerthenpresentedtheUOwithabinderofthoseproducts,sothatUOFacilitiescould <br /> <br />
