moreeasilytheenvironmentallyresponsibleproducts. <br />By2004,FacilitiesServiceshadreducedpackagingby50%ormoreoverthelastyears. <br />BecauseFacilitiesServicesplaceslargeorders,theyhavetheleveragetomakerequestsin <br />regardstopackaging.Forexample,theUniversitycontractswithInsideOregon,partofthe <br />statepenitentiarysystem,forstackablechairs.Normally,thechairscametwotoacardboard <br />box.FacilitiesServicesworkedwithInsideOregontocreatereusablepalletsfordelivering <br />thechairs,eliminatingtheperpetualneedforthousandsofcardboardboxes.NowInside <br />Oregoncanusethosepalletsforothercustomersaswell. <br />TheUniversitysaysthechallengeofdevelopingbenchmarksfortrackingcostsavingsasthey <br />applytosustainablepracticesareEnergysavingscanbetrackedthroughmeters <br />andbillings,butlaborsavingsduetolongerlifeofproductscomplicatesmatters.BillKasper, <br />UOFacilitiesPurchasingManager,saidtheystartwithabudgetorasimilarpastprojectand <br />addandvolatilemarketcommodities,newunioncontracts,marketshortagesdueto <br />naturaldisasters,etc.tocreateabenchmark. <br />Forexample,theUOnowusesenvironmentallyfriendlycleaningproducts.Theyidentify <br />standardsandminimumrequirements,lookatwhattheyspentbefore,andlookatconcentrates <br />andmixingequipmentandwhetherthoseneedexpansionorreduction.Thentheylookat <br />existingcontractswherepricingisoveraperiodoftime.Theyknowtheyareusingless <br />product,wastinglessproductandthattheproductsarelessharmful.TheUOnegotiatedalong <br />termpricebaseduponlongtermusage,andinfactoringallthecosts,theycouldhavespent10% <br />moretheyear,butafter5yearstheoverallsavingsexceeds10%.Theyconsideredfactors <br />suchaslifecyclecostsofequipment,limitingcostofpackaging,decreasingfreightcostsby <br />orderingmoreandbybuyingconcentrates. <br />Anotherexampleisinstitutionalpaperproducts.ThelastcontractactuallysavedtheUO8% <br />incosts,evenwiththemarketbearingpriceincreasesof30%ormore.Thesavingsarosefrom <br />buying100%recycledpaperwheretheycouldinalargerroll,whichcostslessinlaborto <br />maintainandgivesthesupplieralongtermvolumetonegotiatewiththemill.Theyalsohave <br />thesupplierdelivertodifferentpointsaroundcampus,savingtheUniversityfuelandlabor. <br />From2003-04,theUOFacilitiespurchased: <br />2tonsof50%recycledcontentpaperforcopymachinesanduse <br />3500poundsof25%recycledplasticcompositelumberforgrounds/exteriorproducts <br />650unitsofrecycledcontent(minimum25%)furniture <br />250recycled(60%)tonercartridges <br />Avarietyofsupplieswithaminimumof55%recycledcontent <br />LightDensityplasticbagsthatsavethousandsofdollarsinpurchasingcostsandreducewaste <br />generated <br />1500casesof100%recycledcontentpapertowels <br />25unitsofrecycledcontentsteelproductssuchaseyewashstations <br />2100%recycledcontentparkbenches <br />15energypiecesofequipmentthatalsocontainrecycledcontent <br />TheseareamongmanyotherchoicestheUOmakesinadheringtoCampusEnvironmental <br /> <br />
