TheU.S.bicycleindustryisapproximatelya$5.6billionindustryperyear,includingthe <br />retailvalueofbicycles,relatedparts,andaccessoriesthroughallchannelsofdistribution.An <br />estimated2,000companiesareinvolvedinmanufacturinganddistributingcyclingproductsto <br />retailers,andapproximately100differentbicyclebrandnamesareavailabletochoosefrom.A <br />21 <br />widervarietyofproductisbeingsoldtoawiderrangeofconsumersthaneverbefore.While <br />thebicycleindustrytendstorelyonseasonalsalesanddependsagreatdealonconsumers? <br />discretionaryspendingability,thecurrentriseingasprices,ifitcontinues,couldspurincreased <br />demandforbicyclesbeyondrecreationaluses. <br />Thelocalbicycleindustryincludesbikeframe,partandaccessorymanufacturers,assemblers, <br />andretailoutlets. <br />By2020,theCityofEugenewillhaveanationallyacclaimedbicycleclusterthatemploysthe <br />TripleBottomLineinalltheirbusinesspractices.Therewillbeincreasedinfrastructurefor <br />bicycletravelsuchasmorebikepaths,easierandincreasedcooperationbetweenvehicleand <br />bicycletransportationusersandenhancedbusinesssupportforbicycleriding.Eugenewill <br />continuetobeanationalandinternationalcenterforbicycletourismandridership. <br />TheCityofEugeneshouldpubliclycommittosupportingandgrowingthebicycleindustry. <br />TheCityofEugeneshouldrequiretheinstallationofchangingroomsandsecurebicycle <br /> parkingatallnewCityfacilities. <br />TheCityofEugeneshouldpartnerwithotherlocaleconomicdevelopmentagenciesto <br /> promoteEugeneasapremierdestinationforbicycletourism. <br />TheCityofEugeneshouldre-examineandupgradecitybikepathsandbicycle <br /> infrastructureincludinganupdateofthebicyclemap. <br />TheEugeneAreaChamberofCommerceandLaneMetroPartnershipshouldconsider <br /> promotingandtakingstepstoexpandthebicycleindustrycluster. <br />LaneTransitDistrictshouldconsiderexpandingexistingparkandrideoptionsforbicycles, <br /> includingtheexpansionofsecurebikeparkingataconvenientlocationforthosewishingto <br />th <br /> parktheirbikeandridethebusup30AvenuetoLCC. <br />LTDshouldalsoconsiderincreasingbikeaccessonbusesandontheupcomingBRT. <br />Duetoitsreputation,Eugeneattractsanincreasingnumberoftourismandrecreational <br />events.Forexample,the2008OlympicTrialswillbeheldinEugene.Theseeventsoften <br />generateamountsofwasteandtheassociatedtravelgeneratesaamount <br />ofgreenhousegases.Atthesametime,ensuringthatlocaleventsusesustainablepractices, <br />arewastefreeandreduceemissionswouldofferauniqueopportunitytoeducatethousandsof <br />peoplewhilealsogrowingthemarketforsustainablegoodsandservices. <br />By2020,allmajoreventsinEugeneandeventsthathaveCityofEugenesponsorshipoperate <br /> <br />
