usingsustainablepractices,includingzerowasteandcarbonneutralgoals. <br />TheCityshouldadoptstandardsforeventsthatincludereducingtheoverallusageof <br /> disposableitems,recyclingofallpossiblematerials,usinglocalsuppliersandnaturaland <br /> organicfood,anddevelopingaplantoencouragetheuseoflowcarbon-based <br /> transportation.Inaddition,thepeopleemployedattheseeventsshouldbepaidaliving <br /> wage. <br />Thepilotprojectformeetingallstandardsshouldbethe2007EugeneCelebrationwiththe <br /> (proposed)CitySustainabilityBoard/Commissionevaluatingitssuccess. <br />The(proposed)SustainableDevelopmentBoard/Commissionshouldalsoplayaleadership <br /> roleinandimplementingthesustainabilitypracticesfortheOlympicTrials <br /> in2008. <br />TheCityofEugeneshoulddevelopalistofbiodegradablefoodserviceitemsin <br /> supportoflocalretailersandprocessors. <br />Inadditiontotheprimarysectorsdescribedabove,theSBIheldroundtableswithtwosectors <br />deemedcriticaltomakeEugeneacenterofexcellenceinsustainablebusiness. <br />Overthelongterm,thecontinuedexpansionofsustainablepractices,productsandservices <br />willdependontheknowledgeandskillsoflocalworkersandconsumers.Incorporating <br />sustainabilityintopubliceducationisthereforecriticaltolong-termsuccess.Publiceducation <br />forsustainabilityincludestwocomponents:1)teachingtheprinciplesandpracticesof <br />sustainabilityinK-12andhighereducationsettings;and2)applyingsustainabilitymeasures <br />tocampusfacilitiesandoperations.Inmanycases,thetwocomponentscanbecombinedto <br />provideexamplesofsustainablesystemsandhands-onexperiencesforthestudentsindeveloping <br />andusingthem. <br />CollegecampusesacrosstheUnitedStatesspendmorethan$200billionandworkwithavariety <br />ofvendorsandindustries,nottomentionthetheyandK-12schoolshaveontheminds <br />andbodiesofthefuture.Littledataisavailableregardinggrowthinsustainabilityin <br />educationatanylevel.However,theNationalWildlifeFederationperformedastudyin2001 <br />ofsustainableandenvironmentalpracticesat891collegecampuses(22%ofthenationaltotal). <br />Theyfoundthatnearlyalloftherespondentshadsomesortofenergymanagementprogram; <br />25%usedrenewableenergy;72%implementedwaterconservationtactics;recyclingtendedto <br />bethestrongestprogramandtransportationservedastheweakestlink.Curriculumtrendsvaried <br />with43%ofschoolsofferingenvironmentalstudiesmajorsorminorsbutonly8%requiringan <br />environmentalstudiescourseforallstudents. <br />Ourresearchfoundthatsomelocaleducationalinstitutionsareactivelypursuingcampus <br />facilityandoperationssustainabilityprogramsandthesubjectisbeingtaughtinanumber <br />ofsettings.Forexample,boththeUniversityofOregonandLaneCommunityCollegehave <br />nationallyrecognizedcampusfacilityandoperationssustainabilityprograms.Anumberofthe <br /> <br />
