inrevenue-notbadforsellingused <br />materials.That?swhatMarketofChoicemadein2005fromsellingitsdiscardedcardboard <br />packagingtoWeyerhaeuser.About2,000tonsofwastedivertedfromtheandthe <br />preventionoftheequivalentofapproximately6,000tonsofcarbondioxideemissions.That?s <br />whatrecyclingthecardboarddidfortheenvironment.Ahalfmilliondollarsinincreasedsales. <br />Mostbusinesseswouldbethrilledwiththattypeofreturnona$50,000-$100,000investment. <br />That?swhatGloryBeeFoodsestimatesitgeneratedthroughitsoutlayforthird-partyorganic <br />Forty-twothousanddollarsayear-that?stheaveragesalarypaidbylocalcompanies <br />inthegreenbuildingindustry.Thesearejustafewexamplesoflocalcompaniesand <br />sectorshavefoundthroughtheiruseofsustainabilitymeasures. <br />Smallandlargecompanieshereandabroadarenumerouseconomic,social,and <br />environmentaladvantageswhentheyusesustainablepracticesorproducesustainablegoods <br />andservices.TohelpmorelocalunderstandandfromthisgrowinginJune <br />of2005,EugeneMayorKittyPiercy,withsupportoftheEugeneCityCouncil,launchedthe <br />SustainableBusinessInitiative(SBI).ThepurposeoftheSBIistoidentify,support,andpropose <br />deliberatestepsthat,by2020,canmakeEugeneoneofthenation?smostsustainablemid-size <br />communities.Strengtheningtheeconomybywaystosupportbusinessesandexpand <br />qualityjobsthatusesustainablemeasuresistheheartofthestrategy. <br />MembersoftheEugenecommunitydesireahealthyeconomythatconservestheenvironment <br />whileprovidingequitableaccesstojobswithfairwages,andotherservicescrucialto <br />families.Theofsustainability,whichincorporatesmeasurestosimultaneouslyachieve <br />economic,socialandenvironmentalwellbeing--oftencalledtheTripleBottomLine--has <br />emergedaroundtheglobeasthemeanstoachievethosedesires.TheSBIseekstobuildupon <br />theCityofEugene?ssustainabilitygoalsandtocapitalizeonthecommunity?slonghistoryof <br />outstandinginvolvementinsustainabilityactivities. <br />TheMayornameda16-membercitizenTaskForcetoleadtheSBI.Shechargedthis <br />groupwithobtainingideasfromthepublicandsustainabilityexpertsandthenmaking <br />recommendationstotheCityCouncil,theprivatesector,andotherlocalorganizationsfor <br />retaining,growing,andcreatingTripleBottomLinesustainablebusinessesandjobs.A50 <br />personTechnicalAdvisoryCommitteeassistedtheTaskForce.Studentsandfacultyfrom <br />ResourceInnovationsattheUniversityofOregonstaffedtheSBI. <br />TheTaskForcedevelopedtheirrecommendationsthroughanextensiveoutreachprocess <br />involvingover750people.Thisinvolvedtwo?openhouses,?meetingswithnumerous <br />communityorganizationsandtwoonlinesurveys.Inaddition,theTaskForceheldroundtables <br />onthefollowing12topics/sectors:greenbuilding;educationandtechnicalassistanceforlocal <br /> <br />
