<br /> Meeting called to order by the ~fuyor at 7:30 o'clock P. M.
<br /> There being no one present to address the Council after invitation extended,
<br /> Committee reports were called for.
<br /> The Judiciary, Heal th, and Printing Committees had no reports to m~ce.
<br /> The Finance Committee reported favorably on bills filed by the City Engineer
<br /> for payments of the following contracts, and on roll call, such bills were dulY
<br /> allowed: '
<br /> To Stien Bros. for the construction of a sewer in the
<br /> alley between 3rd and 4th Avenue s from Polk Street to
<br /> the C it Y 1 imi ts . $1,524.42
<br /> To Stien Bros. . for the co nstruc tion of a s ewer in the
<br /> alley between 2nd and 3rd Avenues from Polk Street to
<br /> the City limi ts. $1,678.75
<br /> To L. P. Harmon for the improvement of the Polk
<br /> Street Sewer Outlet $16169.00
<br /> ,The Street Committee reported favorabl,y- on the petition to pave Madison Street
<br /> from 11th Avenue to 12th Avenue. On motion, such recommendation was duly approved
<br /> The Street Committee reported it had received a bid of $80.00 from the Eugene
<br /> Sand & Gravel Co. for le vellng down the parkings on 19t h Avenue adjacent to the
<br /> Amazon and. recommended such bid be accepted. On moti on, such rep ort was unanimous
<br /> ly adopted.
<br /> I The Street committee reported that the Street Commissioner.has practically
<br /> finished filling the streets in the Fairmou..Ylt area where t,he; Street car busses go
<br /> round the Loop.
<br /> The Fire and Water Committee reported further as to the new lighting system
<br /> and also stated the Water Board has submitted a new list of Street intersections
<br /> where lights Should be installed in addition to the report filed last February,
<br /> and reportifg that after all lithts are in according to the lists heretofore
<br /> submitted., here will be about :3500.00 additional with which new lights may be
<br /> installed where needed. C. A. McClain of the Eugene Via ter Board appeared and
<br /> addressed the Council as to the needs of new points for installation of lights
<br /> and filed a list for such new installations. Amount other points, itvJllvas determin d
<br /> that the petition for lights on North Park Street should be granted, and it was
<br /> decided to install lights at other points on the Park S~uare which will meet with
<br /> the wishes of the 'vVater Board to give the. best illumination. .
<br /> 11r. McClain of the Water Board invit,ed the Mayor and Council to visit the new
<br /> hydro-electnc: plat being installed at, Leaburg, and on motion duly carried, it
<br /> was decided to accept such invi tation, and Wedne sday afternoon, October 24, 1928,
<br /> '-was agreed as the proper time to go .
<br /> / The Fire and Water Committee' recommended that a hydrant be installed at
<br /> the
<br /> i.ntersection of 1st Avenue and Jackson Streets. On moti on, such re commendat ion
<br /> was unanimously adopted.
<br /> The Ci~ty Attorney, on behalf' of the Police Committee reported that Mrs.
<br /> Dunwoodie was struck by a police car driven by a Police Officer while in the
<br /> discharge of the officer's duty, and that Mrs. Dunwoodie has retained counsel,
<br /> and has threatened to sue the City in case proper se ttlemen t is not made. After
<br /> disuussion it was unanimously agreed that the City offer to pay ~~s. Dunwoodie
<br /> ac cordi ng to b.ills subm it ted, hospi tal and 0 theI' ex'pense s up to the amount of
<br /> $319.80, and on the acceptance of such offer she to file a complete release of
<br /> I all future claims in connection with such injury.
<br /> The City Attorney spoke of the Western Union having heretofore maintained
<br /> se ri vce for Poli ce calls a t night, and stat ed the c ontrac t he re to 1'0 re S'.J.bmi tted
<br /> by the Western Union for the City to sign was not altogether acceptibfl~, and he
<br /> suanitted new co~tracts which he has prepared for the City to execute and
<br /> present to the Western Union. Such contra6ts were duly approved for execution.
