<br />r"" 446 <br /> <br />---"" -- ---,....,- '~'-- <br /> <br />districts, all roads and/or streets within the said district ~nd the location <br />of all fire hydrants within the district, if any, at the time the duly executed <br />'- <br />44,,-, contract is presented to the Recorder , and it was so ordered. <br /> <br />~"" <br />~ <br />....~ <br />4'fr <br /> <br />The City Recorder announced that fue contract between Rural Fire District <br />No. 1 and the City of Eugene had been executed and would be on file in the <br />Recorder's Office. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />.:.j.~,\-.. <br /> <br />The City Recorder reported that the Fire Department had made a call to the <br />R. C. Newbury Handle Company pn Elmira Road and requested the council's instruction <br />as to the amount the company was to be billed. After brief discussion, the <br />Recorder was instructed to bill them on the service charge as per the new chart, <br />a minimum fee of $100. ' <br /> <br />Ira O. Stewart, Councilman of the Second Ward, addressed the council paying <br />tribute to Coumtilman A. A. Reid, deceased, as follows: quote--"I arise in memory <br />of, and to honor the man to whom it becomes my duty to recommend a successor;, <br />Perhaps the minutes of this council do not record the name of a man who has be~n <br />more honestly devoted to the interests of our city and who has given more generousl <br />of his time and talent than did Councilman A. A.Reid and I am 'sure we all honor <br />his memory. The quality of service, and wealth of his experience and the soundness <br />of his jUdgment we shall not attempt to replace or to restore immediately. This, <br />I believe, you will agree would be the impossible." end quote.' He then gave a <br />brief outline concerning the character, ability, and activity of the young man he <br />wished to recommend to fill the vacancy created by the death of A. A. Reid, and <br />presented to the Mayor and Common Council the name of' John W. ,Pennington to fill fue <br />unexpired term of Councilman A. A. Reid, deceased; said term to expire December 31, <br />1942. Motion was made and seconded unanimously approving the recommendation. <br /> <br />Mayor Large stated that the council had offfered the swimming pool project <br />to the School Board of District #4, and they had subsequently refused the same. <br />He wished to know what should be done. Councilman Hawn asked that the matter <br />48' be held until the next council meeting and it was granted. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />46-- <br /> <br />\. <br />47 <br /> <br />Councilman Brownson stated that he and City Engineer W. C. Clubb had gone <br />out and made a study of the Amazon Area on 19th Street between Willamette and <br />Patterson and he would recommend to all councilmen that they do the same in order <br />49 to fortify themselves with basic information concerning that district. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Upon motion the meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />C.
