Councilman Brownson
thought the council should consider it at this time. Councilman Hawn stated
he did not think that the levy as voted was sufficient to build a swimming
pool that would be a credit to the community and he made a motion that this matter
be laid on the table indefinitely, which motion was seconded by Councilman Barette.
Councilman Bond said he did not like the word "indefinitely" as he thought the publi
was entitled to some consideration 'in the matter. After some discussion, it was
agreed that the motion should be changed to' read that the matter be held over for
further study. Councilman Brownson pointed out that such study would require time
and that probably nothing could be done to have a swimming pool fO.r this summer.
Councilman Farrington pointed out that considerable time had already been put in on
this and inspection of other swimming pools had been made. It seemed to be the
general opinion that the money as voted was not smfficient to build an adequate
swimming pool. Mayor Large pointed out that the council had already offered to
turn the money over to the school board if they would take Charge of the swimming
pool for the benefit of the children, it was the school board but so far they had
refused to do anything about it. Mr. Fred Cuthbert was in the audience and Mayor
Large asked him if he had any remarks to make about the seimming pool. He said he
did not think the proposition was as complicated as some had tried to make out.
One of the main things was the location of a site and he thought the proper place
favored by most of the people wa.s on 19th Street in the Amazon District. It was
pointed out to him that the levy for this year would not produce over $10,000. He
referred to the pool at Dallas and remarked about the complete set-up that they had
there. Councilman Hawn asked him if he knew how much that equipment had cost. He
said he was not sure but he thought it was somewhere in the neighborhood of
$60,000 or $70,000; that the building probably cost as much as the construction
of the pool but it was in use only during the summer ti1;!1le. Councilman Farrington
stated the pool in Portland cost about $30,000; no heat is furnished, and no towels
or bathing suits furnished but there was no charge made. Mr. Cuthbert said he did
not believe the people understood there would be only about $10,000 available for
this year. Councilman Farrington pointed out that the district for the new high
school building might have to be changed and that this would probably alter the
location of the swimming pool until the other question had been settled. ~uestion
was called for and the motion to hold the matter for further study was carried.
Councilman Brownson said that a statement should be made to the public as coming
from the council as to the amount of money that would be available for this
year, and also an explanation of the situation as it now stands and 'it was so
49.... ordered.ai:

~
u'l
"--J

" ....:.~

F,;"

,~~" ~

Upon motion the council meeting adjourned.

~
