Hoven. <br /> A letter from the Shell Oil Company requesting they be given a lease to <br /> install equipment to furnish gasoline to the new airport was read. In addition <br /> to the letter was a specimen contract that they suggested. The Mayor explained <br /> it was impossible at this time to tell just what the require~ents there would be. I <br /> Councilman Stewart suggested that probably the selling of gasoline at the new <br /> airport should be handled by the City as a source of revenue. It was the opinion <br /> of the council that considerable study should be given. this matter before any <br /> 48 contracts were granted and no action was taken on this at this time. <br /> An Ordinance specifying certain changes for individuals abutting on a <br /> certain sewer erected by the City from the west city limits to Garfield Street <br /> was.presented. It was pointed out by the City Attorney that a certain part of <br /> this sewer had been paid for by the Plywood Corporation and a certain part by <br /> the City and that the amount set out in the ordinance as to the service to <br /> property owners along the route on the se~er was the amount that should be paid <br /> by the people if and Y'lhen they desired to .'connect to this sewer. The Ordinance <br /> 8682 was presented for its.firs~ ~ea~ing ~nd there being no objections under <br /> suspension of the rules by,unanimous consent of the council was presented for its <br /> second and thir,p. rea~ings. py 'title and placed for final passage. Roll was called <br /> 49 and all voting"aye: -Brownson absent. <br /> '. <br /> A request from the S. P. Company asking for a franchise to construct three <br /> additional tracks on Lincoln Street just North of the present tracks was read. <br /> It was pointed out that the property on which these tracks would be located was <br /> S. P. property and that it was in order for the City to grant this franchise. <br /> 50 An ordinance had its first reading and was laid qyer. <br /> A letter from L.B. S:i.gwart, chairman of. the Electrical Board, was read'. <br /> This letter pointed out tha~there were many defects in old electric wiring and I <br /> that the prese4t ~lect'rical 'ins'pector c;lid not have the time to make the proper <br /> inspections when requests came in for changing wiring in the old houses. The <br /> letter stated that the electrical inspector spent about 60% of his time in new <br /> inspections and theC!ther 40% of his time on police radios, traffic lights, airport, <br /> and the city shops. The electrical board asked that temporary appointment of <br /> an extra man be made to inspect all business, apartments, industrial and public <br /> buildings. The salary and length of service of this appointment to be determined <br /> 5] by agreement. This matter was referred to the fire and water committee. <br /> This was the time to hear objections for assessing certain sidewalks. <br /> improvements and the ordinance had its first reading on June 9th and was presented <br /> at this time, but on account of three or four objections earlier in the meeting <br /> 52 this ordinance was laid over until next mee~ing. <br /> At this time Mayor Large stated that there was a vacancy in the Police <br /> Department on account of a year's leave of absence granted Officer Kearney and <br /> he wished to appoint D. W. Carley to be temporary officer in Kearney's place. <br /> Motion by Farrington, seconded by Kopp~ that this re'commendation be approved was <br /> 53 carried. Carley to be placed on the regular payroll. <br /> Mayor Large said that they had a bid from Mr. Coldren of $25.00 for an old <br /> machine shop on what was once his property at the new airport. He stated that <br /> at this time the shop was being used by the contractors at the airport and that <br /> it was satisfactory with Mr. Coldren that the shed be left there until the <br /> contractors were through witp it. .A motion by Farrington, seconded by Bond that I <br /> 5 this bid of $25.00 be accepted, was carried. <br /> 5J <br /> Councilman Stewart reported at this time that the smoke nuisance was still <br /> being studied and a report would be ~ade at the next council meeting. <br /> Mayor Large pointed out that complaints had been made regarding. the length <br /> of time the Comfort Station in the park blocks was being kept open. A motion <br /> by Hawn and seconded by Farrington that the Comfort Station be kept open from <br /> ? A. M. to 9 P. M. on week days and both toilet rooms be kept open for the same I <br /> hours on Sunday, was carried. ~he Recorder was instructed to so notify Mr. Bown, <br /> 56 caretaker of the Comfort Station. <br /> Mayor Large stated that it was necessary to secure a right of way from <br /> Mrs. ~cCully at the new airport for a drainange ditch. That the total of this <br /> right of way would consist of about three acres. He stated that the city had <br /> already offered $250.00 with the understanding that the City would be allowed to <br /> keep the fence on what was now the w~st line of the airport for fencing this <br /> ditch, but that the price offered by Mr$. McCully had been $300.00.and she be <br /> allowed to keep the fence. After some discp.ssiona ~btion was made and'seconded <br /> 5'2 that this be left in the handS of Mayor Large for settlement.
