I, II An ordinance providing for the working of pr~soners on the streets or on i: other public works of the City of Eugene, where they have failed to pay their fines 14 J; after conviction was read the first time and passed to its second and third readings I., by unanimous consent of the council by ti tIe -under suspens ion of the rules and was ~jplaced for final passage. The ayes and nays were called; councilmen voting aye: !i Farrington, Koppe, Hawn, Crumbaker, and Barette. Those voting no: none; absent: [;Stewart, Brownson, and Davis. The ordinance was declared passed and numbered 8773. 1.1 ;, Councilman Farrington referred to the franchise of the Telephone Company 15 :t which is about to expire, and Mayor Large referred this matter to the Judiciary i: Committee and the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance and report back a t the [I next Council meeting. l; Councilman Koppe stated he had some complaints regarding a building at 3rd and \; Polk which was being erected as a saw filing plant. It was explained that this 16 Ii matter had been before the Board of Appeals and the Board's recommendation that I :/ this building be erected was adopted by the Council at its meeting June 28th. !!Councilman Koppe said if this matter had gone through the regular proceedings there I! was nothing further he could do about it. Iii ii Mayor Large stated some time ago theO. C.D. had presented an inventory of i'i various equipment they might furnish the City of Eugene but nothing had ever come i~ of it, but that during the last week he had received a modified inventory i: in which they were offering, among other things, two pumpers for the Fire Depart- ! ment, one a trailor and the other a front mount for a truck.. Mayor Large further ~: stated the O.C.D. would want a bond in the sum of $5,000.00 for the safe return 0 I:; this equipment if and whenit was asked for by the government. Councilman Hawn I: stated the cost of furnishing this kind af a bond would only be a minor affair in 17 !case we ever had use for these two pieces of equipment. Mr. Clubb stated the 'j Street Department did not have a truck tha t they could mount this p1j..mp equipment ~! on and lay the truck up for use only in case of fire. It was not qui te clear to ;:the members of the Council whether this equipment could be put on a truck and the Ii turck still used for regular street work. This letter had come to Mayor Large from I': the Salem office and as Chief Nusbaum: was to be in Salem on July 19th, it was .1 recommended by the Counc il tha t the Chief make what investigation he could con- 'I . tiCerning these two pumps and report back to the Counc11. ;~ On motion the meeting was adjourned.
