The City Engineer was <br />instructed tQ make an investigation regardihg a lumber yard in this location <br />and report ba'ck at th.e next meeting. This letter explained that the Telephone Company was <br />moving the defense telephone system from the Armory Building and placine <br />it in the 'Fire Department in the City Hall. ' <br /> <br />An amended ordinance to regulate the planting and care of all trees, <br />flowers and plants and vegetation on City property, and within the boundaries <br />of streets and alleys, and in any place controlled by the City involving <br />traffic hazards, had its first reading and was laid over. <br />, <br /> <br />An ordinance ordering a special election for submitting to the electors <br />of the City of Eugene, Oregon at such special election, '" to be held on the <br />19th day of May, 1944, concurrentlyw~th the.State General Primary Nominating <br />"Election, the following amendment to the Charter of the City of Eugene, " <br />referred to the electors 'of said City by the Common council for their approval <br />or rejection and adopting the polling places and using the judges and clerks <br />provided Jina appointed by the County for the said State General Primary Nomi- <br />mating election, and providing for all acts necessary for the carrying on of <br />siad election, and declaring anemergehcy, was read and,-passed to its second <br />and third readings by unanimous consent of the Council by title under suspension <br />of the rules and was placed for final passage. The" Ordinance Was declared passed and numbered 8788. <br /> <br />Councilman Stewart reported regarding the polce to be erected at the <br />northwest, corner of Broadway and Fearl, to support the ornamental lights and <br />the Eugene Hotel sign. He stated that only two members of the Fire and Water <br />Committee had looked at the pole and asa committee had no report to make. -" ' <br />He stated that perhaps after the ornamental lights had been put on the pole <br />and a cap-put on the top that the complete pole would not look 80 bad. Council- <br />man Crumbaker suggested that if Mr. Johnson would consent to the present <br />arrangement for the support of the Hotlel Sign that the'erection of'the pOle <br />might be deferred for the duration of the war with a view of~tting a better <br />looking pole after the war.
