A request was also received from Carrol L. Sheraden to be allowed to convert <br /> I the second floor of the house at 954 Third avenues west into three apar~mentz. <br /> A request to convert the house into two apartments was granted to P. L. Durkee <br /> on May 1, 1944. The board recommends that this request be granted. <br /> A request was received from Warren U. Olsen to be allowed to remodel the <br /> building at 527-531 Monroe street. The Board,recommends that this request <br /> be held up pending the submission of plans and details. <br /> Graham B. Smith appeared before the Board on behalf of the Sterling Furniture <br /> Co, located at 67 East Eighth avenue. They desire to extend the balconmes <br /> to completely cover the entire floor space, and are asking for a waiver of <br /> the seven foot clearance in one portion of the store room. The Board recomm- <br /> ends thatthe request be granted. " <br /> . <br /> The following Rooming House applications had been approved by the <br /> Lane County Health Department, Chief ofPol:!.ce and Chief of Fire Department, <br /> were read. On motion made, seconded and carried,licenses were odered issued: <br /> , <br /> 26 George O. Adams - -351 west lOth St. Mrs. Olive O. Darby --469 east 15th <br /> Mrs. A. pickerman -875 east 13th St. Minnie Thomas - - - - -754cLincolnSt. <br /> Mrs. L. Boroughs---239 east 14th St. U. S. Nat'l Bank -- - -681 Willamette <br /> An item of $370.00 for payment of interest on Series -H- Refunding <br /> 27 Improvement bonds was presented by the Treasurer and a motion was made, <br /> seconded and carried that a warrant b~ drawn fo~ this amount. <br /> An application for a transfer of Class B retail and Class B package <br /> store beer license from A. L. Marshall, 550 east 13th to Max J. Robinson <br /> was approved by the Council. A request from Cecil Caldwell, Ruth Caldwell, <br /> 28 Louis P. Artau, P. R. DeLeMare for a transfer for Restau~ant and package I <br /> store 'class A license for 845 Willamette from Aneita Behnke and H. C. Burr, <br /> was presented to the Council. This had been brought to the Recorders office <br /> at 5;00 p.m. and the Police Comm~ttee had not made an investigation. Council- <br /> man Hawn stated that in order to a void laying over this matter that he would <br /> move that application for the license be granted with the approval of the <br /> Police Committee which would report to the Recorder on September 26th. On <br /> vote this motion was carried. ' <br /> , A resolution passed by the Eugene Chamber of Co~erce on September7th <br /> i was read at this time. This resolution was approving the proposed annexation <br /> , of Chambers and Westmoreland additions to the City of Eugene, and requested <br /> 29 ; that the City officials give whatever assistance they could to this project. <br /> Mayor Large stated that he had received a telephone call from N~. Hayden and <br /> anf they were read to circulate petitions. Engineer Clubb stated that he had <br /> the description of the property prepared and .the City Attorney was directed <br /> to prepare petition forms for circulation. The Recorder was instructed to <br /> addfress a letter to the president of the Chamber of Commerce thanking them <br /> for their interest in the proposed annexation and advise them of the City's <br /> assistance in the matter. <br /> A ietter from the Christian Business Mens Committee approving the <br /> 30 action taken by the Council concerning V-Day resolution was, ordered placed <br /> : on file. <br /> .1 <br /> i Mr. John E. Davis addressed the Council at this time and stated that <br /> I an effort had been made to obtain emergency housing for the Eugene-Springffeld <br /> 31: area, and stated that Lodge #542 of which he was a member had on the 20th day <br /> , of September, 1944 passed the following resolution;- . <br /> , <br /> "Resolved that Lodge #542 is in favor of Federal Housing for the <br /> Eugene-~pringfield Area." <br /> i <br /> I Chairman of 13 different lodges had signed the letter presented by Mr. Davis <br /> I I <br /> stating they were circulating petitions amoung their_re$pecti~e emebers.. A <br /> : copy of a letter dated September 25th from the Eugene Chamber of Commerce to <br /> I Fred Cuthbert, Mational Housing Agency, Corbett Building, Portland, was read <br /> I at this time. Tfuis letter was endorsing the request for immediate construct- <br /> I ion of a temporary federal public housing project, of sU'f1cient size to <br /> I accomodate the additional workers now needed by employees in the Eugene area. <br /> I <br /> I Also a letter from H. J. Cox, secretary of the Willamette Valley Lumbermens <br /> I <br /> I Association was read at this time. The Lumbermens association had addressed <br /> ! <br /> I a letter to Mr. Cuthbert requesting construction of a necessary number of <br /> temporary housing units in.t~is_communityyand requested action of the Council <br /> in regar~ to this matter. Councilman Hawn stated that objections raised at <br /> the time Federal Housing was proposed in Eugene would be mild compared to the <br /> ~ <br />
